Not sure if this has been posted before ..... however as many of you might know a Horse Version of 'Pergolide' is now available, which is more expensive than the Human version

Anyway, if your horse is already on the Human version and stable on it, then the Vet can prescribe this (assuming there is the availability ).

Well, I have just called Hyperdrug for my usual repeat prescription, under the cascade system and they asked me it the prescription said 'Human Pergolide' and I confirmed that all it said was 'Pergolide'.

Apparently, even if it says Pergolide, then they are obliged to send you the Horse version. So I have now had to contact my Vet to ask them to reissue the script, stating 'Human Pergolide'.

I thought I would post this, so that no one ends up with the Horse version, when you know your horse is stable on the Human version and it becomes a problem, once you have received it.

I know the Horse version may be better than the Human one, but I personally want Motor on what has worked well for him, over the last 5 years ….. And long may it last :):)

Just to confirm there is no clear guidelines on written prescriptions and pergolide vs Prascend . Your vet could be pulled up by the VMD for writing a prescription for Pergolide when they should only be prescribing Prascend regardless whether your horse is currently on it or not. It's a grey area and many vets will no longer write written prescriptions for pergolide until this is clarrified by the VMD.

Its exactly the same drug, just in different packaging.

The price at the Vets works out virtually the same as the generic form. Well, it does at my Vets anyway - this may well be different to online prices.

I was going to say the same as Britestar, its exactly the same drug, just different packaging. Instead of being in a small green packet, its in a larger silver packet and now says for animal use only on the front!

My 8 yr old Sec A has Cushings and I had heard from my pharmacist that human Pergolide is being withdrawn entirely from the drug market and when I approached my vets they said the same. The vet also told me there would be a slight increase in the cost of the veterinary product so I shall have to decide...pony or chocolate.....hmmmm:)
