I'm just interested to know what sort of diet people who own horses have....particularly those who compete regularly.

I love sport and love (to try!) and eat healthily but always find myself in a rush so grab things on the run and then there are all the (unhealthy!) temptations at competitions.

So, do you have a healthy diet, do you make a real effort to eat healthily or do you not really care..?!

Pointless post to some maybe...but I have just been thinking about it and wondered..!

I don't compete but I am a teetotal non meat eater who can't eat too much stuff like bread, pasta, rice potatoes.

Breakfast; sugar free muesli, plain yogurt, fruit and nuts

Lunch: Massive salad, tuna, maybe tiny baked potato or Gazpacho (love it!) wholemeal bread and a bit of cheese

Dinner: Fish and veg or vegetarian dish with no starchy carbs

I eat a fair amount of fruit and yogurt as snacks and drink loads of water, keep coffee drinking for the morning only.

Oh yes, I stuff chocolate and at the moment ice creams too.

Wow, that's a very detailed reply..! You sound extremely healthy! I would be proud if I had a diet that 'good'!

I used to eat what ever, but the 2nd half of last yr i put on quite abit of weight, comfort eating and cooking for 1!!
Now i try and eat relatively healthy stuff.
Breakfast: Double coffee, orange juice, special K, low fat yoghurt.
Lunch: Water, salad or sandwich usually
Supper: Whatever Mum cooks
wink.gif
but she is an amazing cook so nothing ever unhealthy and she know i am trying to be aware of what i eat.
I also try to eat fruit as a snack, no crisps etc. V little alcohol, 1 glass of rose with supper.
When i am competing i do end up snacking but i try to keep away from crisps and the burger van, and i live on lucozade sport!! Or lucozade alert if i am knackered!!

Today my diet consisted of:-

Breakfast - leftover pavlova from last night
grin.gif

Lunch - 1 Magnum icecream and one bread roll
Dinner - Soup, bread, tortilla and more pavlova

The major problem is having a very slim OH who gets grouchy if not fed large amounts. Having to cycle 45 minutes to work each way certainly burns it off though..

in my non-eventing years i ate reasonably healthily but very gradually gained weight in spite of all the exercise. (when i was younger i could eat whatever i liked and never put on an ounce, but it gradually caught up with me.) i've tried a few diets but have been low-carbing (Neris and India's Idiot Proof Diet!) since Jan 08, with a few breaks, and it works like a charm. takes some discipline as i'd rather survive on chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, bread, pasta, and kid's sweets, though!
so, breakfast tends to be: wilted spinach with melted cream cheese and a fried egg or two.
lunch: salad with cheese, or tuna, or something.
supper: steak and salad, or similar, basically protein + fat + green veg.
strawberries, cream, blueberries, sweetener, greek yoghurt etc for treats.
i got up to 11 stone 4 at my heaviest and got down to 9 stone 8 ish to event 15.2 tb last year. am more than that now but on my way back down again!
it works if you've got a bit of determination and can get through the first 2 weeks to escape the carb addiction!

marymoo - you really need much more protein at breakfast time - yours is the classic slimmer's brekkie that has you starving by mid morning. Stick some seeds/nuts in the yoghurt and try muesli as it's carbs take longer to digest than processed cereal

kit279 - LMAO

kerilli - yup those carbs are the killer. I'm ok if I eat very little of them and earlier in the day.

If i am working really hard then i have Kellogs start, if not that much keeps me going, last yr it was a slice of toast for brekkie until supper!!

I desperatly need to lose weight, i dont eat until 3 or 4 oclock, maybe thats where im going wrong, i dont kick start my motabolism (sp), but i hate eating if im not hungry..

Well being 12 and surronded by fairly slim girls I do 'try' and eat healthy.

Breakfast- 2 pieces of toast, with mixed berry jam on (no butter) with a small glass of orange juice

Lunch- A bottle of water

Dinner- Whatever mum cooks, something like cottage pie, pasta, ect. but i could live on jacket potatoe with ham :P

When im competiting I only have 1 piece of toast for brekkie, and then energy drink throughout the day, for some strange reason I lose my appetite when i compete and when it gets rather hot.

interesting post

breki - a cigerette, can of coke zero & an apple
lunch- dependant on if im home or driving about it can vary to a sandwich to Mc D's
Dinner- is a proper meal cooked by the parents
snacks - about 3 packs of crisps, 4 apples ( i have an addiction) loads of chocolates!
show days - bacon roll, jacket patatoe cheese and beans or chips. always followed by haribo strawbs in the lorry on the way home!!!!!
i always eat more in the winter - i do random diets but they never last as i forget
tongue.gif
weight never really been to much of a problem ( driving past a Mc D's on the way to a show is however my biggest weakness!)

Breakfast - Nothing

Lunch - Sandwich or Cheese and Crackers or Salmon Pate sandwiches and an Ice cream in summer (triple chocolate cornetto today - yum... yum....!!!
grin.gif

) in winter/spring/autumn nothing

Tea/Dinner - Salad or Hot Meal quite often followed by something chocolatey

I mainly just drink water

Too much chocolate, too much coffee, too many sweets...

Because of a digestive issue, I eat lots of simple carbs.

Breakfast: cereal and banana, or French toast with fruit, or cake/donut, or sandwich with German sausage or cheese...depends on what's in the house, really. COFFEE!

Lunch: sandwich, soup, curry on rice, lasagna...whatever the cafeteria has on offer that looks palatable. Usually chocolate, and more COFFEE!

Supper: rather random, as I find cooking boring...last night, I had guacamole with pita, and a coriander/chive burger patty. Usually more chocolate, and fruit if there's any left.

I was 2 stone heavier once, but as long as I ride every day, I can eat pretty much what I like. Which is good, since I have the self-discipline of a labrador puppy when it comes to food.

OOh some of you eat really well! Im pretty random with what I eat just tend to have whatever I like when I fancy it!
Today it consisted of:-

11am ish - half of a baguette with cheese and ham and the majority of an iced chocolate latte
grin.gif

4pm ish - greek feta salad wrap from m&s
9pm ish - some carrot sticks dipped in humous, a few olives and about 3/4 mini chocolate rolls again from m&s oh and a small glass of wine!

v random

Its interesting though because according to a sports psycologist (sp?) nerves are mainly caused by not eating or drinking properly before competing! I know thats half my prob coz it takes a massive effort to force down some bread on the morning of a show, I usually have such butterflies!

I do usually have a more proper dinner but just couldnt be arsed tonight

Not very disciplined, and absolutely not a herbivore!! Def an omnivore, can eat anything, ... and I mean anything!!
Breakfast: anything, and fast
Lunch: anything, and much (if I can)
Supper: anything, but little (if I’m not starving)
Drinks: everything
Quite a good cook, usually make some pasta with hot spicy filetto sauce the night before a comp.

I've lost a stone since having my baby, but still have 1 to go. So at the mo it's:
Breakfast: museli with low fat yoghurt or nothing if I'm in a rush
Lunch: salad with cheese/ham/tinned salmon
Dinner: cooked meal, or in this weather quite often more salad with meat/fish
Snacks/pud: trying to be good and go for fruit or rice crackers
Downfall: wine, do wait until 7/8pm before I start though!

Mine is:

Breakfast: half grapefruit, bowl of museli with skimmed milk, coffee.

Lunch: cheese and salad sandwiches, or soup.

Dinner: pasta/meat/fish/etc, with plenty of salad.

I don't snack but will have an apple in the afternoon. Will have a glass (or two) of wine in the evening.

Probably should have more fruit and not so many carbs.

I too seem to have hit that point in my life where I only have to look at a pack of walkers salt and vinegar and my jeans are tighter.... so apart from shopping blindfolded hehe... I try o eat healthy..

I am literally on the road all day so breakfast is normally a wheatabix with skimmed milk and a banana.. then gym for an hour!!!

lunch is normally a salad from m and s (other supermarkets are available)

Dinner is what ever my other half cooks when I role through the door at half 8.

I will however quite the gym when I can ride ever day as that's much more fun!!!

Used to be:-
for breakfast fags coffee/ lunch fags coffee , supper fags kebab/Indian. But now got serious about competition so breakfast, coffee, lunch coffee, tea whatever mysterygirl cooks (banned from kitchen in the interest of public safety), and shedloads of wine!!!
