Have any of you changed your hunt because of petty politics? Our hunt is a small one and always struggling for funds, with constant changes of Mastership and internal bickering which is really starting to get me down. Below is just one of the recent issues I have had...

For a fundraising idea, I suggested a Hound Sponsorship last season but didn't act on it. However at the beginning of this year, the Chairman of the Hunt Comittee called me to ask if I would get the scheme up and running for this years puppy show. Therefore I have spent the last few weeks taking photos, printing out breeding certificates etc, all at my own cost and in my own time. One of our Masters, who has backed the scheme from the start, asked me to also design a hunt mug to be made available for sale at the puppy show, so have spent £300 on this, which I am happy to donate all proceeds to the hunt.

This Master then tells me that they are setting up for the puppy show and would I like to come along to find a space for my 'stall'? So along I trot, proudly clutching my carefully made sponsorship certificates, to bump straight into the Senior Master, who then gives me a lecture on the scheme not being appropriate for the puppy Show as she doesn't wan't it turning into a sales pitch!! Although I do actually see her point, I did tell her that I was asked to run the scheme by a committee, which she sits on, and launch it at the puppy show........?!

What really p**ses me off is that I am one of a few full subscribers and have hunted with them for 5 seasons, always volunteer to help at hunt events, have nannied at Childrens meets etc, walked puppies, but rarely have even had a 'thank you'.

We have another local pack that I am thinking of joining, but would be sad to leave the good friends in the field I have made, and also want to see the pups that I walked progress, so am at a real crossroads.

Sorry to rant on, but needed to let of some steam to those that understand!

My sister is changing hunts this forth coming season, particually because we got a new huntsman 2 seasons ago who is utterly rude and never even says 'hello' my sister has been a subscriber for 12 seasons and her in laws are tenant farmers in the hunt country.
Plus she has been an active member of the supporters commitee and always helps with the fund raising and the new huntsman doesnt even attend the funtions, after all it all goes toward his wages. We have one master who is excellent he and his wife put soooo much into the hunt and are just s**t on by the commitee. So she had a number of days visiting a neighbouring hunt hunt last season and they made her so welcome and were so friendly.
My sisters attitude is why give my money to an unfriendly bunch, when another hunt will quite happily accept it.

i do fully understand, my hubby is a huntsman and the kennels are with us on the farm. our old master ditched the committee years ago,( the only decent thing he ever did!) we are now just a 2 man band, hubby and joint master. this works brilliantly, no wages to pay, cash goes just on feed, bedding, and vaccinations for the hounds. we dont have subscribers as such but very generous followers,we do horse racing nights, bingo nights, mouse racing et al-and the funds are rosey.

I haven't but I seriously considered giving up hunting at the end of this season just finished because of the hunt politics. It was stopping me from enjoying the hunting.

It seems to have resolved itself for now tho. If I were you, I'd take a step back, and if anyone comments just explain that you don't feel that your help was appreciated. Any decent human worth their weight will understand.

chin up!

Actually the tale has a better ending than I thought!!
I continued with selling the Hound Sponsorship certificates at the puppy show, although against the Senior Masters wishes, and managed to sell 21 out of 27 hounds making £210.
Since then I have had no less than 3 apologies from said Master and to quote, 'you were right and I was wrong'!
The only problem is that she keeps phoning me up now to ask if I will run stands at other events, so obviously did too good a job.....sigh
