**Maybe don’t read if your sensitive

Few questions, I have had horses pts by the hunt in the past but quite a while ago and I just chose not to ask.
I have also emailed my local hunt master to run this by him. I’m not a hunter or friends with him but do know him via other people so hope to get a reply, In the meantime…

Do horses still get fed to the hounds?
Do they get given to hounds if they have been on bute or other drugs? If not what happens to them?
If the vet injects will a hunt still be able to take a body and dispose of it, again how?
I’m not squeamish dead is dead, admittedly this is going to be a very tough one but I want to know the details.

My understanding is that any carcasses with drugs on board are cremated. I have no idea whether there's a time limit for drugs out of the system though.

Sorry - always hard especially when it's general wonkiness taking them. I have one too ?

Sorry about yours. :(
The hunt master just sent a nice reply, he didn’t outrightly answer that bit but said the cost would be slightly higher if they collect after injecting because they can’t use them as feed, so that answers that.

Sorry you are having to face this decision. The MFH has probably told you but when I asked my vet the same questions recently she said that very few hunts now take horses for their hounds. The only one relatively local to me that will take horses won’t take ones that the vet has put to sleep by injection as they cannot feed them to the hounds. It may be best to consult your own vet as they will have the best local knowledge plus an idea of costs etc.

Our hunt feed to hounds if they’re shot and haven’t been given drugs lately - so most horses who have been ill aren’t suitable, but a lot of elderly but ‘healthy’ ones are fed to the hounds. Others are cremated.

They will take horses who have been put down or have died in other circumstances, but price for a pick up only is higher than pick up after shooting.

The price generally depends on weight and size - a small pony is cheaper than a draft.

I’m very sorry you’re having to look at this.

Firstly let me say how sorry I am that you are having to consider these sorts of questions.

I haven't used the Hunt since the mid-1980's when we used them for my first-pony, so I cannot give you any accurate information concerning procedures by Hunts.

However: sadly we've had to use the services of the Licensed Knackerman twice within the last year and he has a link with a local zoo to take fallen stock - the proviso being that they must not have had any drugs such as bute in their system (obviously).

If he can't use them for the zoo then he will take them for cremation.

Personally we use this individual in preference to the Hunt; not only is he considerably cheaper, he is well known in my area for his efficiency and compassion and for doing a good reliable job at a difficult time. You just get the feeling that he actually CARES about what he's having to do and that has got to be a special thing. The horse honestly does NOT have a clue what is happening. For my pony: when it is her "time" I have written out a protocol which is visibly displayed on my yard and also verbally told most people around the yard etc that I do not want her PTS by lethal injection; the reason being that when we had to scope her recently she fought very hard against the sedative and I just "knew" then that I would need to make a wise choice about the method if she needs to be despatched at any point.

So sorry for the choice you are having to make. XX

I don’t actually know what a knacker man is then! I thought it was just an old term for the huntsman who did that job!
I can look into that as well but In all honesty
I was very happy with the guy my local hunt sent out the one time I lost on In this area, he was really nice to me and the horse.

I’m not sure if I should say this (?!)but I’ve been incredibly lucky I’m that some very kind person we knew has let me bury horses on his land. So it’s been injection, which isn’t actually my preferred option as I hate the stagger going down part. Then they have been buried.
So I have a bit of guilt about not “keeping” this one. Truth is I’ve never visited the others though and I’m not letting myself think about that because I feel it’s not really a me worry but could turn into a thing, if that makes sense.
I’ve also looked at cremation but can’t justify that. I had my last dog done and a memorial glass made, it’s not him though, it doesn’t mean a lot to me like I thought it would so not going down that route.
I’d love to bury him but can’t so just wanted to know what will happen.
I think then because he’s been on a fair amount of drugs as I understand they will shoot them incinerate.
