Hunt whips

Not sure where to put this but this seemed the best place, I use an old hunt whip out hacking to do gates but I'm pretty sure it's a man's and find it quite bulky and heavy to carry, does anyone know if the woman's or child's are lighter and thinner in circumference, I've seen some on Colne saddle just not sure which one to get.

I have been trying to buy a ladies hunt whip but would like to feel it first. So far not actually in stock anywhere reachable even at saddlers whose web sites say they have one.

Yes, they're definitely smaller & lighter, think mine could be a child's.

I couldn’t carry a man’s whip and I found the ladies still too large for my hands. Mine is a child’s. It is rather small.

Sounds a stupid question but would I still be able to do gates with a child's whip? It won't bend?! My husband found a lovely thin bamboo cane one walking the dog which is a perfect size but I can't do gates with it as it bends!

@Skib I don't know where you are in the country but the people at the Hunting Shop are incredibly helpful and always have hunting whips in stock.

I got these out of storage. I’m sure they’ll never be used again but they're not going anywhere.

Top…my daughter’s whip, made I think from an old showing cane, very light.

Middle…My Swayne and Adeney. Bought second hand in the ‘80’s from a lady who had retired. She wanted it used. It was her 21st birthday present.

Bottom.. a cheaper version that has had the shaft recovered. I used this on wet days.

I carry my great grandfather's engraved hunting whip when I ride (including hacking) - it is quite a sturdy beast tbh and not as 'elegant' as a ladies whip but they are so varied that you really need to try handling one to know if it will be comfortable for you. I wouldn't want to carry a childs whip as they are small and slender but a nice ladies whip is a lovely thing and there is nothing better for helping with gates etc.

I have a sawn off walking stick, with a straight handle. Obviously it doesn't have the lash, but you might not want this anyway.
