Hi guys, my friends doing a hunter trial at little downham next weekend and has no clue what to wear... she asked me and i dont know either so can anyone help? thanks x

it usually says on schedule whether hunting dress is req or xc colors. best ring the secretary to clarify as it varies. skulls and back protectors whill be mandatory i think.

yeah she knows about the skulls and back protectors and thinks they like your neck covered... does this mean full tweed jacket stock etc or can she just wear a stock and a long sleeved shirt?

I run a hunter trial in the spring for my PC and compete in some too. Rider is required to wear a BP and a non-fixed peak hat (over a certain height 80cm i believe for PC but recommended at all levels). Some bodies require a long sleeve top to be worn.

I would operate on the basis of covering every eventuality;

I would wear beige or similar colour jodhpurs.
Leather boots & chaps/long boots
A long sleeve top
A BP
A non-fixed peak hat
Gloves
Number bib - sometimes they provide you with a bib but sometimes you have to put a paper one in your own clear plastic bib.
I would also carry a whip and have spurs but that is personal choice- check the rules for spurs if she is entering a PC event as many require you to have done certain PC tests/have your DCs signature for permission to wear spurs, although I believe this is not necessarily the case if you are entered in a specific Non-PC section.

Sometimes people do wear their hacking jackets, a shirt and stock but I have never known this to be a rule I have only done PC ones though!

Also check the rules if you have any non-standard riding gear eg the interlocking mountain horse boots and stirrups are not allowed in PC even if the boots are used with standard stirrup treads.

Check your tack for any loose stitching etc particularly on stirrups and girth straps both for your safety and for any tack checks that may take place. Similarily check the rules on bits allowed.

If it is an unaffil run by the venue and does not state that it follows any rules eg PC or RC then they should list any rules for tack/equipment/dress, ring if you are unsure.

For the horse;

The obvious - bridle, bit, saddle, girth, numnah!
Would advise -Martingale/breastplate with a piece that crosses the neck in front of the saddle/ neck strap so you have a "grab handle!".
Stud girth if the horse tucks up well whether studded or not
Studs if ground requires
Boots which offer all round protection on all legs.

If at all in doubt, ring the venue/body running it as you dont want to turn up on the day nervous about your kit, and enjoy! :)
