hunters vs hedge hunters?

PUBLIC forum simsar!!

Don't know about you but we are being hounded with anti's (pun not intentional!)

But yeah - it's just because I don't pay attention. :)

Yay! We made it on the list! :) Even though we probably shouldn't bother going because we aren't that interested in hounds. :p

I think they are making the best of it TBH. Although you've decided you don't like RH any more - please try not to slate them on here, just for my sake. :)

She means most of the hunt staff are not professional. Rockwood Harriers have an amateur huntsman and this season 1 pro whip, although in the last few seasons they have all been amateur.

Going back to the original question, I am more of a hedge hunter. I like hounds, I like seeing hounds work and we have hound pups every year on the farm where my horse is kept. But, were it not for my interest, sorry, obsession with horses, I would never have had any interest in hunting.

I have not hunted purely for the jumping, I have been out and not jumped a stick by choice when I lacked nerve or a safe jumper. When bloodhounding, I would not jump for the sake of it and I would give anything I really didn't like the look of a miss. I would go through a gate instead, which has never been a problem for me as all the horses I have had have had to be good gate horses, as hacking where I do, you would spend most of your hack unmounted otherwise!

As I am married to an ag contractor who is from a big farming family, I know all about headlands, and FWIW, he hates hunting people, and after reading the comments of some, I can understand why!

Well your not really guarenteed anything over here maybe a few pre made up fences, we dont have anything like the number of Hunt fences that you have in England so if you are just in it for the jumping you would be better of going Drag Hunting or on a XC run instead.

Who cares about hunt fences in Ireland! you breed the best horses in the world!! That makes up for everything!

Joking apart about the jumping you have the Galeay blazers!! That says enough.

Starbucks - I wasnt judging anyone or giving advice, just saying how I find it here.

There is a XC run localy to me which is great I do enjoy it. It's set over 30 - 40 ish fences depending on where its held each week, no hounds but you get a LOT of people out and its very fast at the font.

However I would rather go proper Hunting. Hounds, adrenaline, friends the whole lot.

I have an ID two yr old entire and he will be out next year, can't wait (not with me with my jockey). He enjoyed having the hunt through last week but did look like an arab!

Yes I have bored everybody on here with the photo's but he is on our site if you would like to have a look. Sorry I won't start again. I'm fat so I won't be riding him! LOL

bloody hell, talk about bitching and putting folk down!! i'm only writing covering my experiences- i worked and hunted 35 years ago with the VWH and the Heythrop and looked after Ronnie Wallaces horses when he was the master. we are "proper hunting people" too, my husband is the kennel man/ huntsman, we have our hounds here with us(registered pack)and i'm only stating what i see and read, if i'm wrong so be it, but being alot older than many hunters out these days i do see a difference in knowledge and behaviour.

"Anyone going solely for jumping really needs to rethink their options, but of course having a jump around is lovely. "

I think you mean that you would like us to rethink our options. There is no "necessity" for us to rethink our options at all, of course, especially since the hunts need our money even if a small proportion of the followers would rather not have us there (and presumably can afford the massive sub and cap hike there would need to be if we weren't).

i always think - only jump if hounds are running (seen to many accidents happen with folks hopping cos bored), always prefer watching someone else take leads over hedges, just so i can check landings (also this works out 'tumble club' and then we can avoid!!- but some times we have to go first, if ask by master!!) BUT if in any doubt, there is ALWAYS a gate around........

Dont most packs have different days, the ones where you know you are going for a hedge hopping day-Mon or Fri with us, and others when you are not....I love to watch hounds working and have been lucky enough to grow up hunting with 'true' hunting people but I would not pay £1000 a year to watch them from a horse, I love to have a hedge hopping session, but they dont tend to last all day and you can normally do both - jump a few hedges and watch hounds work- perfect mix  must say though I do get fed up with jumping for the sake of jumping...... people jumping big hedges next to open gates just seams a bit silly IMHO!!

Most people who hunt to ride work Monday to Friday to pay for it!

Yea good point :p .... think there were alot of sickies pulled this Monday by the size of the field because there were going to be hedges involved - many more out than the Monday before which was a steady day... suppose that shows that lots of people enjoy the hedges as much as the hunting!!
