i know from been hunt groom, we always use meths to wipe over the horse when it has beeen brushed and washed after hunting and sometimes before hunting.. does anyone else use meths too? and what is its proper name/??

Do you mean the proper name for Meths or the proceedure?
Meths = Methylated(sp) spirit. The proceedure is hot ragging or hot clothing.
I do it but with surgical spirit in the hot water.

Sorry to sound stupid, i know about hot clothing, but why do you use surgical spirt?

on an old yard we used meths-but only on saddle area- was meant to help toughen skin in saddle area.
Not many yards do it now as saddles and numnahs etc are better made and fitted so no need to! wouldnt use all over the horse though? if hot clothed after clipping then maybe they use the meths to get rid of any grease but a proper bath before hand may be preffered??

i use hot cloth with dettol in the water - or srugical spirit but dettol is cheaper and does the same job of removing the grease and killing off and bugs likely to cause skin problems.

Izzywizz, I always wash off and hot cloth in surgical spirit, it helps harden the skin. It gets grease off too. Some people use Dettol, Ive used washing soda crystals to hot cloth after clipping that really does shift the grease.

And I also add vinigar!
