I hunt mine in a snaffle- if they are really too much then I'd consider changing but tbh, so long as they stop with the field and you can check before a fence should you need to, I dont expect perfect brakes!!
when I last hunted my own it was my ponies and they both went in Dutch gags, for everything else they were in snaffles but they were just too strong unless in the gag to stop without pulling their back teeth out.
As for choice of bit in general as always depends on the horse, i wouldn't always choose a gag first as a stronger bit, just in the past it has given the desired level of control.
Thats interesting, can I pick your brains as I agree with you! My young horse is ridden and hunted in a fat eggbutt, she is very happy. After nagging from the field - as she does put her head low and open her mouth, even though she still isn't what I would call strong - I put a 3 ring in her last time, albeit on the top ring. She hated it, kept throwing her head and coming back at me, if you know what I mean. How about a dropped snaffle? Any good??
I tried her in a flash once and eventually she stopped rearing and fly bucking long enough for someone to take it off! So have since been scared of shutting her mouth.
I hunt Sunny in a snaffle aswell, she doesnt need anything more as she isnt strong, she has other ways of expressing her excitement, i dont need brakes i need superglue!
I exercised my arab in a hackamore but I hunted in a myler long shank combination with double reins (after trying what seemed like every other bit under the sun), suited him perfectly, I could stop when I wanted to, and where I hunted if you didn't stop you could fall off a mountain in some places. I didn't, and don't, care what anyone else thought and several people had a go at me about it, funny how they never took up my offer of "YOU ride him in something else then!"
Hunted another arab in a hackamore for years, horses for courses isn't it?
