I took my welsh who had always had a soft mouth, and I had no concerns about taking him in a snaffle in a pelham the first few times (double reined) just to have the option of that second rein if necessary. I'd much prefer a little tweek then having to haul them up if they do get a bit too onward bound.

What I do these days is swap his noseband to a grackle and it works well.

And ask him politely to stop so you can change the bit once he’s tanked off with you & you are about to overtake the MFH 😂😂😂

yeah absolutely I mean only a complete tube would wait until the field had stopped and changed the bit. Why make life easy for yourself :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

So as my serious answer of bluddy course not. Having had to do this and also at common ridings it’s not hard to hop off and change bit and get back on. Well I didn’t find it hard.

BB, I've done the same on daughters pony out dragging. But i was on foot in case we needed to swap... and we had a stop at the end of each line.
I took 3 bits with reins and cheeks attached, v easy to drop and swap. Started in a Pelham in 2 reins, ended up in a happy mouth American gag, which the 14hh pony used for hunting the rest of the winter, tho hacked in a simple French link snaffle :)
