Hunting in East Sussex or Kent - Advice Please?

I am hoping to go cubbing and hunting with my new horse this season, he is from Ireland and the ad said 'hunted in Ireland' when I brought him but is is a right wuss and a bit anxious and excitable sometimes when I ride him!

So, I thought I would try him on a slow hunting day to begin with (gulp!)

I have been out with the East Sussex and Romney Marsh hunt a few times, but it was a before the ban, and although it was ok I never felt 'part of the hunt' just like a hanger on at the back!!

Should I try again with this new horse or should I try further afield - I think there is a hunt in Kent - Ashford Valley?

If anyone has experience of ESRM or AVH would they give me any advice? One day I would like to try Team Chasing too, is there anyone in the East Sussex or Kent area that do this?

I would also be interested in any replies, as would love to go cubbing/hunting this winter, but never been before so would want a 'friendly' 'quiter' meet to start with!
 
Perhaps we should go together! there doesn't seem to be any replies from anyone that hunts in East Sussex .. I will ring them and find out when the best quiet time would be, I'm guessing it will be in September?
 
I am in East Sussex, never hunted but would love too. I have no clue on hunts etc round here though!! Also never been hunting EVER!
 
Ooohhh I am in East Sussex, and I have heard of lots of hunts, and I have done one childs meet about 5 years ago with the Old Surrey and Burstow, they were all lovely, but I could not walk for about a week :o When new horsie arrives I will find somewhere nice and sedate to teach me the ropes!!!! :D
 
i no the huntsmen from west street and tickenham and althoug have never been hunting with them paul is a really nice bloke and im sure will give you a good days hunting.
 
I'm hoping to go out this year to get my friend's pointers qualified - I think with the ESRM. I am told that it tends not to be fast paced, and that the jumping is good for an inexperienced horse (and rider in my case, haven't been since I was about 10!) Be interesting to see what other think, and see who goes where!

Hunting with the ESRM was quite slow when I went a few years back, but it may be good place to start a new horse, although there was a lot of standing around and I think this is where I will come unstuck if my horse gets excited, I don't want to show myselfup!! :o
 
I used to go out with the Ashford Valley in my latter PC Days. From what I remember it was a good day, most of the jumping was gates with the odd hedge as most of the farmers had stripped out the hedges and replaced with post and wire. I do remember doing lots of flat out gallops through woods trying to avoid the trees.

It was a few years ago now, so I couldn't comment on the current people. I was actually in the Romney Marsh pony club, but hunted with the AVH mostly cos it was hacking distance to many of the meets.

also been out with old surrey as there was a kids meet 2 lanes away from the yard - they were very friendly. the kids thought it was hilarious when i hit the deck :smirk:

i'd love to get a sub and go with someone regular as i really love going - but im a wimp and wont jump anything over 2'6 (although i did with coakham) and some seem to have such big stuff, hedges etc which is a bit much for me.

i'd be interested to know where you go, what its like etc.
 
Hi, I have emailed the Coakham to see if I can go out on a quiet day early in the season, maybe hound exercise, the lady there is going to let me know if this is possible.

If all goes according to plan with the new horse (if he copes with it) I would like to get a sub with them, I'm a bit of a wuss too so I am going to take things slowly, we could meet up and be wuss's together!! :grin:
 
they were fun when i went out with them!

the days cubbing i did with Old surrey may suit your new horse possibly?

i was doing fine when i went with coakham, think last jan, hurling over the 2'9/3 tiger traps and timber absolutely fine - then it went pair shaped last season and bounced out the front door over the bigger type jumps so that set my confidence back. cant knock the pony, shes only 13.1 and jumps everything so its not her!

i just am better off when i can scoot round the bigger stuff as it makes for a more enjoyable day out for me! i do love it. really looking forward to the winter.

i've done the mock hunts at warlingham, they are ok but can be a bit of a hooley as normally have a high attendance
 
I want to be getting over the bigger stuff as soon as he is ready (he is 17hh!)
I'm sure we will be fine, he is just an unknown quantity at the moment, as soon as I know he can do it/behave himself - were off!!

Then onto team chasing - that's the plan gulp!
