would love to take my 4 yo hunting well prob not till next season now but my question is what did your youngsters or first timers do or react like to there first hunt just imagine me having hassle the whole way if i stay on long enough my horse is super good with traffic goes past any thing unless he feels he left behind he has a total strop or if there horses in paddock next to road we shoot off any first timer stories

They are all different!

If you can wait until summer, we started hound exercise with horses around the end of July, this is basically long slow hacking with the hounds. It was mainly the 2 hunt staff and me ( groom ) but other people were welcome to join us with young horses if they wanted to. Its very good for young horses as it introduces them to the hounds without the excitement of hunting. Then Autumn hunting at the start of the season is a bit more of a step up but still fairly quiet, especially if you do the early mornings at the beginning, not many horses out.

Good luck!

Take a friend with you hunt from a distance, if settled catch up closer probably best to start when autumn Hunting starts as quieter and slower, with lots of stubble fields to stand in good luck

Hi,
Try to go with someone who has been before, hunt from a distance, if calm catch up and hunt closer to other riders, best to start autumn hunting in august when its quieter and there lots of stubble fields to stand in and watch hounds working. Good luck

oh that sound good and would be good if i could do hound exercise in summer and the fact it starts off slow to as just had this vision in my head of getting there and everyone being fit as fleas and tally ho and we off and me on me bum within a minute lol im sure he will be fine as he is ever so good with most things but its the fear of the unknown thankyou so much for your help

Get in touch with the hunt you want to go with, they will have someone to nanny you and help you out on the day, as they want everyone that come on their meets to have a good time and first timers or 2nd timers need help.:):)

Perfect the first time, set off from the meet on two legs the second time! ;) He now knows what it's all about and is like a coiled spring when we get to meet and is very impatient to get going. It has improved his jumping no end though as it has made him bolder. :)

The only way to see how he will react is to try it. It can either make or break a horse. It will either fill them with confidence and help them to become bolder jumping across country, or it will be too exciting for them to cope with and will blow their brains.

Why don't you take him cubbing first next season and see how he goes? :)
