I would like to start hunting at some point but the horse in question is a 13 yo that has previously never hunted. Would it be a good idea to get an experienced hunter to ride him on a couple of occasions before I bite the bullet? How would I find such a person?

I've never been and I took my 5yo today and had a great time (see my post) just ring the secretary before hand and explain the situation and do what I did and wear a green ribbon and introduce yourself to everyone when you meet. Everyone i was with today was so helpful and friendly and the master kept coming to check in on me to see i was ok. Dont forget.....hunts are after new members so it is in their interest to make sure you come back!

Ditto georgiegirl! Unless you're a particularly nervous rider, your horse is FAR more likely to stay calm and happy with a rider he knows. And hunting isn't that much different to a lively fun ride! Only one VITAL rule (apart from staying off crops and closing gates) and that is to turn your horse's head TOWARDS hounds until you're SURE he won't lash out at one that passes a bit close. Letting your horse kick hounds is THE unforgiveable sin.

Enjoy yourself!

You will have great fun age I think is irrelevant as most horses I know just go with the pack.... I have a friends horse that wont jump a stick she took her hunting and she went like a top class eventer like JanetGeorge said a few no no's don't kick a hound if you horse is worried by them face them and don't overtake the huntsmaster or whips you will get barked at and I have seen people threw off the field also use a good bit have fun and god luck
