Hi all you hunting people!:) Im thinking of going hunting with my pony. I wanted to do a draghunt but there are none near me so im now considering going 'proper' hunting:D I just want to know what happens if and when the fox is caught? Do you see it being killed and how do they do it? (think they have to shoot them now dont they? Im really clueless!:)

Any info much appreciated. x

Have you checked for blood hound packs near you, they chase a human quarry (marathon/fell runner) so there is no kill (unless the runner is very unlucky). They are different to drag packs, they don't hunt a trail or artificial scent, just the smell of a live runner - this is known as hunting the clean boot.

Check what traditional packs do near you many now don't chase foxes at all but hunt trails just like drag packs, not all some use other ways to hunt legally.

I was told that the fox is shot, whether you see this or not wasn't made clear, but the woman who told me insisted that the fox was always dug out of the ground and shot, and never torn to shreds by the hounds, pre or post ban...

I backed away slowly, smiling and nodding, didn't make any sudden moves...

Depends on the hunt and many other things. Some follow an artificial trail, some use guns, some have a bird of prey (I think?!) and so on. Also there may not even be a kill, pre and post ban, the fox does get away.

Also you don't have to/won't always be right in the heart of the "action" so to speak... at the back or wherever. You don't have to see anything if you don't want to.

most hunts now do follow an artificial scent, but if a fox or hare (depending on the sort of hounds) appears the hounds will chase it. But in answer to your query you don't see anything as the field stay behind the field master who is often well behind the huntsman, plus the fox is shot, so you don't need to worry about seeing anything

I've worked on a hunting yard and hunted pre and post ban.. Pre ban even going twice a week I never saw anything... And now, well you follow a scent so you shouldn't see a thing

What do you see? The backend of all the horses in front of you. You might just see the pack of hounds in the distance with the huntsman and whip riding close to them, and you should hear the horn (if the huntsman remembers to blow it) and you should hear the pack of hounds "giving tongue." Apart from that you will spend most of your time controlling your horse and avoiding riding intothe back end of someone else and picking your way through the mud and eying up the best place to jump and avoid jumping on top of anyone else. Have fun!

agree with both these.... I've been hunting all my life just about and have only once seen anything, and basically the fox and then hounds ran under my pony's belly and disappeared off the side of a very steep hill into some forestry

Er this. Really.

Ive been hunting all my life (Sorry ladies not as long as some of you admitedly) - But in 15yrs or so all I have seen is a few fox's legging it, another few sneaking away under a hedges, and a lot of daft or confused looking hounds!!!

Mostly you will be so worried about your horse/your friend who is drunk/that other horse who is about to kick you that you wont have time to see anything else!!!

You might see some fake blood/ tomato ketchup on an 'anti' sometimes!!!

Seen a fox sat happily on one side of the field watching the dogs going round in circles completely the opposite direction....
