My friend took her youngster autumn hunting once when she was 3 months I think. He is a very safe pony and it was a very quiet day with no jumping (not that she would of jumped anyway). But she decided it wasn't worth the risk so didn't go again but is planning her days for next season.
There is no evidence that riding makes a miscarriage more likely so it has to be a personal decision. The problem is many pregnancies - about one in five - end in miscarriage and if that miscarriage happens to occur after riding the individual is likely to blame that activity and themselves.
I think it ok the first few months when the baby is still snugg in the pelvis, personally i think its a bit irresponsible after 3/4mths. Why would you want to risk it...
We have had several recent pregnant ladies out with our hunt- the general consensus was that you could jump until the bump stopped you folding! My step sister was born 24 hrs after her mums last day out (a full term pregnancy so the due date was known)
ATEOTD its a personal decision. IMHO there is a huge difference between going for a quiet woodland day on an old cob versus thrusting on a fit thoroughbred!
I have ridden while pregnant, but i wouldn't have felt happy about galloping/jumping on a hunt, i'd have popped a few fences in the school though if i was on a horse i trusted 100%.. it's down to the person really, i just know that I would never have forgiven myself if an accident happened because i thought it was worth the risk.
I hunted my ISH when I was 23 weeks pregnant, then stopped hunting and just hacked out until I was 32 weeks. Got too uncomfortable after that! Kept needing a wee! Had the quickest labour, no problems and back into my pre pregnancy jeans 5 days later!
It's such a difficult decision. When I was first pregnant, I'd have done anything but then I had 2 miscarriages and the third time I was pregnant, I'd have done anything to keep the baby inside safe. Luckily, I managed it third time around and she's now 20 months old. Am now pregnant again and due to have this baby in a few weeks time. I didn't ride at all when pregnant with my daughter but I'd just had the miscarriages and docs had warned not to. Also the horse I had then was a very sharp bucking bronco eventer. This time around I rode in early pregnancy because I was keeping my husband's hunter ticking over during the summer and he was calm and placid. I was delighted to hand him back though, simply because I was so exhausted.
Having had the miscarriages, I wouldn't risk hunting when pregnant but equally with a calm quiet horse on a gentle day, I don't see any greater risk than hacking out. Our parents generation didn't think twice about it!
Funnily, with regards worrying about what others think, I had the opposite and felt that everyone must have thought I was a woos for not really riding in pregnancy!
are you pg SueEllen? congratulations if so, fingers crossed if not!
I had my last day's hunting when I was about 3 months pregnant. Told myself I wouldn't jump, take it steady etc etc. Then there was a little rail with no way round, so I decided to jump but waited til the back, faffed around like a muppet and fell off. How silly did I feel? As you say, the mental thing was a big problem for me. I stopped riding after that, until the second baby was nearly 2, about 3 months ago!!
Also I was knackered in the first 3 months, which could make it a bit harder if you suffer the same way.
yes, hunted until i was about 4+ months with my 1st, TBH looking back i was bonkers, i'd had a new horse (that i tried whilst PG) and was on a bit of crazy one, jumping everything in sight, (horse was awesome, husband was less impressed, didn't hunt while pg with the 2nd (timing of the pregnacy) but rode until i was 34ish weeks with both of them, (kept me sane!)
