Some of you may have seen my posts about Paddy my new horse who was fab....apart from the fact that he would not hack alone and was really really nappy.

Well......8 weeks on.....and lastnight we went for the most amazing ride.

I had been doing loads of hacking out with sometimes one horse and sometimes up to 4 of us. Also my mum who is the most amazing star has been riding her bike out with us as he seemed to be fine if he had the bike.
He wasnt just nappy....but he was also a nervous jibbering wreck when he was alone so we took time to try and get out and about as much as possible so that he knows that the hedges arnt full of mosnters and he will go home to a nice stable of haylidge.

Well lastnight, there was noone at the yard and mum was unable to come out with us so i took him out alone and he was BRILLIANT.

No napping, no spinning, no bucking.
He walked out calmly without working himself into a sweaty, quivvering state.
We went past a pig, a heard of cows that were charging about the field and also a load of sheep....all previous no go's!
We went for about 4miles to a track i used to ride down as a kid and we went for a few canters...it was great! i felt 13 again and probably had the same big grin on my face too!
Part way along the track i had to get off as a branch was blocking the way....he stood perfectly still whilst i got back on....normally he spins around.
On the way back we had some lovely canters along the verges...(although we dont have amazing off road riding near us, its a lot of roadwork...we are blessed with a lot of really wide and flat verges to canter along...some of them even have ditches to jump :):):) )
I rode back past my mums house, she didnt know i was going to take him out alone so it was a really nice surprise for her to see me ride in the driveway covered in mud with a big grin on my face. She has worked really hard in helping me to get paddy to hack out so her face was a picture.

Its really helped also adopting a very awfull position of loose reins, sitting like a sack of potatoes and singing....but it really has worked in getting him calmed right down.

Im so pleased with him, im really hoping that he now trusts me when i say that hacking alone is fun (especially seeing as alot of the other horses on the yard are in excess of 16hh so cant fit up all of the overgrown tracks with low branches that we can sneak under ;-) )
Fingers crossed this is the start of some fun hacking alone!!

Thats fantastic!! Im reading this also with a smile on my face as last night i took my youngster out and we had a lovely hack alone to. Its taken a while she would be nappy and every now and again i would have to get off and lead past scary things :( She would plant her feet and try to spin back round to home. But last night we had a fab hack and no geting off, we met some scary things but she listened and trotted past which is much better than standing still !! :)
So joint celebration !
Well done there will be no stopping you now obviously your hard work has paid off. Sometimes it feels like your never going to get there and when it finally clicks it makes it all worth while.

ooh thats brilliant news....well done to your youngster. If its the horse in the big picture in your sig she is gorgeous btw.
Im hoping it finally has all clicked. He seems to be getting a lot more confident all the time and lastnight was just fab.
Chocolate cakes all round as a celebration :-D

Seriously well done you and the "awful" position does work wonders doesn't it.

My lads still a work in progress so your post is very encouraging.

Alibear...the awfull position technique certainly seems to be helping. Its almost cowboy like in the sense of loose reins, one hand on the reins the other on my leg, slouched....but there is not one muscle in my body thats tense...so im hoping that he can feel that i am really really chilled and he is getting confidence from it. I think though my riding instructor must cringe everytime she sees me coming back into the yard and probably denies all knowledge of teaching me!!!

I really think hacking out with a bike has helped alot. He really seemed to get confidence from it.
I could lead him anywhere, so there was no point longreining/leading out as he just walks along on a loose rein next to me so i needed to do something where i was on top of him but still gave him confidence. So i highly reccomend the bike method....if you can find someone wanting to get fit ;-)

Keep persevearing you will get there in the end! :-D

Just seen this skychick. Bloomin well done you. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D All your hard work was worth it in the end.

You kept saying when i had sorted out the horrid one you would send him to me. Looks like your hacking out alone and well behaved first. :D
Whats your adress?

I wonder how much it would cost to pop Herbie in the post? :p;):D:D

the only thing about these nightmare issues we have to face is that it makes overcoming them soooooooooo rewarding. Bl*(&y well done you and him!!!! warmed the cockles of me heart to read your post! and the great thing is its all cumulative good experiences so you can only go from strength to strength now, he will know he didnt say 'scary mum' last time so hasnt got a reason to next time.
well done!

Lol lets see how the next ride out alone goes.....that one could have been just a fluke!!! Im certainly not counting any chickens just yet!
But im hoping that lastnight has shown him that hacks alone = lots of fun up little tracks that the big horses that he rides out with cant ride up as they would decapitate their riders on the branches that we can duck under!

I would love to see the look on the person at the post office's face if you took Herbie in to be weighed for postage!!
I think you will do a far better job with young herbie than i would......paddy has just about worn me out mentally!! i dont think i could do it again for a while!!

I thought of you and herbie yesterday actually....i was riding past a gateway near the yard and paddy spooks at it every time....i thought it was because of the killer geese that are there.....but yesterday i spotted that they have 2 pigs and instantly thought of herbie and his killer pig!! I did chuckle to myself!

You've gotta watch those pigs you know. LOL :)

I'm shore it's onwards and upwards for you and paddy now. There'll be no stopping you to now he knows he can trust you. Keep making it fun especialy up those tracks and i bet he gets home and laughs at all the big horses as they miss out on so much fun. :D

Exactly....this is why i love my 14.2hh pony...i can get through most of the tracks around (although there isnt that many unfortunaly) the bigger horses are all a bit stuck as most of them have branches that are really low.
Hopefully it will be onwards and upwards now...if not then the bike comes back untill he is happy to go it alone again!

Youll get there with Herbie laura....if i was closer i would come and cycle out with you!

Lol thanks Kenzo!
He must have wondered what the heck was going on when we got back lastnight.....he had a carrot and an apple and then another half a carrot!! he has been on a treat ban for a while.....(typical cheeky pony getting a bit fond of pockets etc ;-) !!)
