Hurt my coccyx, how long to heal enough to ride?

When I did mine I couldn't bear sitting in my saddle but I bought a second hand Torsion treeless one and along with a thick pad under it is I could ride in that as it was soft. It was several months before I could be comfortable in my normal saddle.

I believe an Acavallo gel pad can be a huge help and I have heard of people cutting a hole in the middle under the coccyx. I hope you're feeling better soon, that sounds nasty. Do go and get an x ray if it hurts, though sitting in A&E for hours won't be any joke!

There’s a specific coccyx acavallo gel pad with a hole in it.

It took 6 months (sorry!) for my acute coccyx injury to calm down, but it left me with an unstable one that dislocates when I sit down, though pain there is now minimal, it just pops and clunks.
Was just going to say that.

Hope it eases quickly SC 😢

🤣

Funny not funny - the pain is intense - I hope you can walk ok?? I used a cut out seat pad in my car - HUGE help

From experience wrt riding, gel saddle pads, and a lot of work in light seat. My thighs definitely got stronger! I think it took mine 4-5 months ish

It depends on the depth of bruising, and injury. I’ve fallen off and bruised my coccyx 3 times I think. The worst thing was at night, turning over in bed. Mine was a bit more of a sideways squashing I think, I could ride in a week.

Blimey, that sounds painful, have you had an x-ray? Not quite the same but I fell twice in Dec, both times landed squarely on my butt , first time on tiled floor, 2nd time on the drive outside, it did take about three weeks for the bruising to go and weirdly, some days it didn't hurt at all, other days quite sore.

Acavello pad sounds good, will have a look.

Went to A&E first time I did my coccyx, they just gave me painkillers and sent me home. Apparently treatment is the same whether it's bruised or broken, so I don't think they even look any more.

That sounds unpleasant!! Did you not ride at all for 6 months?

That's great that they do a specific pad. Will have a look.

Snap! This is the third time I've injured mine too.

Yep turning over at night is excruciating.

Yikes! Glad you're OK. Don't know about you, but falling makes me feel a bit vulnerable for a while.

It's much more painful today, think it's because the bruising has come out more.

Keep the arnica and comfrey up, comfreybis "knit bone". As for riding proceed with caution, I upset mine for months after I got coccxyx pain I think from a new too firm mattress. Some saddles are more domed from side to side under the seatbones and that will more likely give you issues than one that's not, if you have a drawing curve you may be able to start working out what shape works and what doesn't.

The gel pads might help but they're not really correcting with regard to your own anatomy. I've seen a very creative saddle fitter make a pad that was wedged out to either side of her seatbones but super thin over the middle of the saddle. She cannot find a seat to suit her for love nor money, even as a fitter!

There is a product in development called Sculptaseat which I pray finally comes out soon as it should be great for this sort of thing.

I hurt my cocyx in a very minor car accident. Couldn’t ride comfortably for 6 months. After the first couple of weeks riding was the only thing that hurt. Possibly a change of saddle may have helped.
Hope you heal up quickly.

I hurt mine years ago (2002ish) from a backwards landing snowboarding wipe out. I've no idea if it was fractured or badly bruised. It hurt on and off for years and I still get an occasional twinge. I use to particularly notice it if I sat on the ground in the cold outside when hiking. My mum had a similar experience falling on her backside doing ballet as a child. She said it hurt for years afterwards.

I can't help with the riding advice as I wasn't riding at the time.

I was thinking the other weekend, if I could some how wear my padded snowboard shorts when riding after I came off and landed on my bum. Unfortunately the padding would get in the way. :(

That's SO kind. Thank you!

Am at work but will message this evening if that's OK. 🙂
Hi southerncomfort. I hope your coccyx is feeling a bit less sore now. Sorry not to have sent sent the Chtist Lammfelle sheepskin pad to you yet. I've had a really bad cold this week, and that, together with gale-force winds and heaving pontoons (I live on my barge on a fierce tidal river) have made it unsafe to get onto dry land. My antiquated mobile phone has deleted your name and address, so please could you send me these details again and I'll get down to civilisation ASAP and send it off to you. Again, sorry for the delay. Gill.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling too well.

I doubt very much that I'll be fit to sit on Bo before March, so please don't feel I'm sitting at home waiting for it.

Sounds like conditions there have been awful. I do hope you don't get any of this snow that's forecast for tomorrow.

Please do take it easy, and I hope you're feeling better very soon.
All the best

Great - thanks. The Met. Office forecast for us, in Area 5 Inshore Waters isn't giving anything more violent at the moment, so I hope to be able to go ashore tomorrow and replenish the store cupboard.
I'm sorry that you're still having pain from your injury, and that analgesics are doing something to reduce the pain.

I cracked mine falling off a pony onto the road in walk. 🤦‍♀️ Utter agony. Took six weeks before I could even walk reasonably easily, driving brought tears to my eyes. Take it very easy.
