I spotted someone walking their Mal in the park this lunchtime and overheard a lady say to her son 'Look at that lovely Husky' and it got me thinking...

Different dogs, from different places...

How many similarities do they have, and what are they?

People always squeal 'husky!!' for any dog vaguely of that type, must be very tedious for mal/inuit/samoyed owners. :p

Cyrus is the one to ask about personality differences but the physical differences are easy peasy, mals are mahoosive in comparison, never have blue eyes and the tail tends to curl well over the back.

Mal left, slightly oversized adolescent husky on right:

He weighs over 45kg, she weighs 27kg.

Judging by that... and the photo I have of Tyson's dad...

He is not a Husky X GSD...

ETA: If i could manage to scan the photo to you Blackcob, do you think you would be able to look at it and tell if it were a mal or husky?

Ok, I hold my hands up, call me stupid if you like (although that'd be mean! Lol) bit what actually is the difference? If you showed me a husky and an alaskan malmute I wouldn't have the faintest idea which was which or of indeed they were even a separate breed.

So, what IS the difference, is it like the difference between an Andalusian or a Lusitano horse? I mean they do look similar so do they orginate from the same dog breed initially or not?

Honestly, if you see them together in the flesh there is no mistaking that they are very different.

Broadly speaking malamutes are freighting dogs - big, heavily boned, broad and immensely powerful dogs for pulling heavy loads. They stand up to 28" and up to 60kg in weight. Always brown eyes, a more tightly curled tail, coat tends to be longer, ears set further apart.

Huskies are for speed - think of the dog relay teams delivering the life-saving medication to Nome, Alaska, when it was too dangerous to get a plane through - much more sleek and agile in appearance. They are no taller than 23" and no heavier than 27kg (as I pointed out above, mine is a freak at 24" and 27kg which is far too tall for a bitch :o). Eyes can be any colour including bi and particolour, tail is more like a fox's brush, ears set quite close together.

The above photos aren't the best but trust me when I say that he was almost exactly twice the size of my dog! He stood up to give me a hug and without any effort at all was able to hook his front legs over my shoulders and look down at me (and I am not short!). I don't usually condone dogs jumping up but he was a great big soft bear of a thing and not in the least bit intimidating, it was very clearly intended as a hug and very cuddly indeed. :o :p

My boy Diablo (Siberian)

Pretty well off for bone and coat, tail is a little overbent for a siberian should be more of a sickle curve, 23 inches to his shoulder he is upper height for a male siberian but still a good half inch inside the breed standard, quick minded and fast very intellegent most definitely a ferrari of the dog world

My friends boy Xabi (malamute)

Good strong bone and great coat, tail is perfect, head is broad and masucline, well within the standard height for a male malamute (they can go up to 28 inches within the standard)
Hes a real work horse, one of the best male malamutes on the trail in this country in my opinion the perfect 4x4

When a malamute and a siberian are bred to the standard it is very easy to tell them apart, unfortunately with the indiscriminite breeding on both sides its getting harder to.
I hope the pics and basic descriptions help people and if people are interested in differences in personality I can go into that when I get back from work :D

Really interesting, thank you. The dog in my picture looks much bigger than 23 inches but I can't work out how to scan the bugger!
I'd be really interested to hear about their breed characteristics and personality differences if you find the time? :)
