Husky or malamute ?

Stassi, I am leaning towards the malamute slightly more from what I have read. Both dogs require alot of exercise and commitment so i don't think you could be an 'average owner' with them.
Malamutes seem to be a little bit more dependant than a sibe would be, as I believe a sibe loves everyone and anyone. However, I think in my circumstances I'll have to make sure the malamute gets well socialised as a puppy, as they can be same sex aggressive and I don't want it turning on my mum's king charles!

To be honest both breeds are very hard work and I personally wouldnt recommend them to anyone who wasnt going to let them do what they are bred to do and I dont mean competitively even recreationally such as BC and her sibe.
With them being breeds that should be kept on lead its the only way to really properly exercise them, I didnt believe this until we started working ours I thought my eldest boy was full of excitement on his walks but he came alive when we started working him.
In my mind they are cleverer than Labs, Collies and spangles their minds are very sharp and quick and will always ask why your asking them to do it and figure if its worth it to them lol

My moot does fetch lol lol she loves her frisbie and ball on a rope, my eldest sibe will play in the back garden and house for about 10 mins before he gets bored but then thats a sibe for u lollol

my bitch (in all senses of the word) just sits there looking at me like im mad, well i am but she doesnt have to tell me. mind you she loves chasing the local cats & squirrils, she is yet to catch one but it has been close a few times.

This sounds very familiar, lol! Dax will fetch a ball lobbed across the paddock with one of those ball chucker things, drop it at my feet in exchange for a treat and then wait for it to be thrown again. Some days she'll do this for half an hour without stopping and then protest when I stop chucking it out of fear of her collapsing with exhaustion, but some days she won't show a blind bit of interest even if I start squeaking and running around lobbing tennis balls left right and centre.

More often than not she'll fetch it two or three times and then sit and stare at it about 50ft away, giving me an 'I've brought it back twice, fetch it your bloody self' look. :rolleyes:

They're incredibly intelligent but they don't have the urge to please humans that 'normal' dogs do; they'll only do something if it pleases them. This is why recall is an issue, as chasing a rabbit is infinitely more pleasurable than coming back to me for a fluff-covered schmacko from my pocket. :p

Not only in your mind! Sis's pack participated in research by Southampton University some years ago, part of the experiment was meet and greet, after the first visit the Husky's said, Nah we did that last week bored now!!!

The conclusion of the survey paraphrasing was that Husky's reach a mental age much higher than the other breeds in the survey , they mature mentally, whilst breeds bred for their servitude remained very childlike throughout their lives so yes they are officially cleverer, which is great if you are not interested in doing anything that doesn't involve them belting around tied securely to a sled or body belt!!!!!
 
Just stumbled on this thread don't often come in here, but couldnt not look at this thread having owned Husky's for a long time:eek:. But im going to read that paper when i get 5 looked interesting:).

Can 100% though say Huskys do rule lol, have 3 Sibe's sat here atm & im sure there waiting to use the computer lol:D.
 
PMSL - just had the letting agent round to do an assessment of our house. Daxy-dog likes to 'sing' to visitors and when I come home which involves wandering around the kitchen and living room going 'woooo-ooo-oooo'. Letting agent walks in, goes 'holy jesus' at the dog and then hides upstairs to fill in all of his forms. :p

She wouldn't have touched him, silly beggar. Made me laugh though, another reason to have a husky!
 
Yea but if he had been robbing you Daxy would have said go ahead mate take what you want just leave the fridge open!!!

They'd be interesting in watching a human run around an agility course for their entertainment. :p I can imagine getting Dax to do a couple of jumps or something but she'd soon lose interest, they won't do anything just to please a human and she loathes repetition. Plus it'd have to be done in a secure area else she'd just p*ss off into the next county as soon as she got bored. ;)

Shame really 'cos they're quick as greased lightning and very athletic, they'd probably be really good at it.

You kind of have to rely on the 'holy jesus it's big and it's howling' factor to scare burglars away, in reality she would indeed let a burglar in and show them where I keep the silver. :p

Unfortunately not the siberian was bred by a friend of ours and the malamute owned by another friend, my three are far too interested in running in harness lol this summer though we are going to try some healwork to music, one of our mentors in the breed is a clicker trainer and has taught one of her malamute bitches over 30 moves so we`ll see how this trio can do
