I noticed that Grace was figgeting with her mouth a lot this morning when I rode her and was dropping her right ear a little when asked for an increased amount of right bend. I know her back etc is ok as only had it checked 2 weeks ago so I was wondering whether she might need her teeth checking.

She has just turned 6 and was last done when she first arrived in October...

How often do you have your horse's teeth checked?

Thank you,

Rebecca x

Every 6mnths ish...dentist tells me if he will go longer, but he is 5 so still going through changes in his mouth

We have our youngsters (1, 4 and 6) done every six months and then go on to yearly checks after that. Might be worth getting your dentist out to have a look - last time ours came out to our 6 yo he had a really wobbly tooth which didn't need extracting but was bothering him a bit. Fortunately the tooth fairy came about 3 days later!

Every 5 months. Star is a cribber so I like to have her done frequently, and through trial and error decided that 6 months was just that bit too long, but 5 seemed just right

Every 6 months....my technician is really good, if he takes a look & sees there is nothing to be done or possibly just a little placque to be removed then he doesn't charge anything...not even call out. Mind you when he comes out most of the owners on the yard have him see their horses.

Thanks... only ever had Hannah done every 12 months, but I do think Grace could do with a check up after riding her today. Never noticed it before, but there was a definite drop in her ear on the right hand side, more so when more pressure was added.

I think I will get her done anyway... I was hoping to hold out until October when Hannah will be due (and back in work) but looks like two visits will be required. Typical

Cob no. one...never in 10yrs
Cob no. two...twice in 9yrs
Pony no. one...never
Pony no. two...twice in 9yrs
Pony no. three...never

All checked a few months back and all fine..
Its not something I generally bother with.

Mine has to have hers done every 6 mths as her teeth were in a shocking state when i got her,it needs to be kept an eye on as she becomes unhappy in the mouth if they arn't done frequently.

Pride is every 12 months, Dentist was up 2 weekd ago and when I asked when I need him back he said oh not for at least a year! Having said that if I noticed any difference with P in regards to his teeth I just give him a call;

Most of the people I work for get their horses done every 6 months. The teeth grow about 3mm each year. it may not sound or look very much but it does make a big difference

I have mind done twice a year, so every six months and that keeps them nice and comfy in their mouths. There are some on my yard that need to be seen 3 times a year due to specific problems but the norm is twice.

Every 12 months starting as youngsters at 2 yrs old.
More frequently if i thought there was a problem .
I have 2 that occasionally need an extra 6 month visit.

Archie has his done every 3months, Blossy has hers done once a year as shes obviously a lot older.

Archie only has about 25hrs of grazing a week tho, the rest of the time hes stabled and has ad lib haylage - so his teeth arent getting the use the would if he was out in the field every day, hence they get sharper quicker.

How funny to see this post today! Ours were done this morning. Generally we have ours done once at the start of the eventing season and once at the end, unless a problem is suspected. Plus my boy has had a blocked saliva duct in the past so it's good to keep an eye on that too. I think yearly is generally fine for older horses though, I just like to have no excuses for my dodgy dressage scores!!

Thanks everyone... just waiting for my dental technician to phone me back to arrange a time. I suspect Grace might need doing every 6 months as she has some teeth coming through at the moment (no idea what they are

) I think so would rather get those checked out.

P_G - Grace is not on that much turn out at the moment because of how wet our fields have been, in fact until today she has only being getting out for an hour or so every day. I am paranoid about mud rash because she had it so badly last year and it caused secondary problems (the puffy bag leg caused by lymphatic drainage problems leading to cellulitis/lymphangitis).

So she has probably not had much turnout in the nine months I have had her because of mud rash/winter turnout/absolutely no summer weather at all
