Hyperactive dogs

Agree to a certain extend but IME that can sometimes create a dog that can **only** settle in the crate because it is enclosed. The place command teaches a dog to hold itself with no physical barrier to prevent it breaking. Not disagreeing, and crate training is certainly a good jumping off point but if you can recreate the behaviour everywhere and not just the crate, lie down because I told you to, is even better. It's just a really helpful thing to train generally and can be transferred wherever you go.

Oh yes, I find the crate training then extends into the rest of the house/out and about but ime young dogs/pups don't understand staying in one place without a boundary, it's too much to ask of some dogs, especially if there isn't a role model in the family.

Thought Id create a free puzzle for dog. screwed up loads of bits of newspaper and put a treat inside. This dog can sniff out half crisp when we are outside at 50 yards ! Couldnt sniff out the treats and was extremely wary of the newspaper balls ! Thought Id try before spending a load on snack balls etc. Back to the drawing board

Make the game easy to start with. Use something worth finding like chicken or cheese. Let her see you hide it. Ask her to find it.

Build her confidence in her ability to find the treat. Increase the difficulty gradually.

To be fair, if she had not seen you putting the food in there, has never done anything like that before and didn't know what was expected of her, you might as well have asked her to do the crossword in the newspaper!
Dogs don't automatically know 'what to do' in every situation, that's why we have to train them/teach them.
