Hypothetical how much.....

If a horse was advertised at £12,000 and in the current market you thought that was about right, how much of a reduction would you think was reasonable if the vetting picked up a couple of small sarcoids but said they were treatable?

Background - was having a hypothetical conversation with a friend about her horse (who is much loved and going nowhere!) and we couldn't agree on how much they reduced the value. Vetting was for insurance purposes - conversation arose around whether she should reduce his value on the policy as a result.

Nothing if the horse was sound and a good honest sort in demand. Plenty of experienced buyers wouldn’t care too much.

If the horse wasn’t in demand or selling then you would need to adjust the price accordingly.

Those that do care about sarcoids most likely wouldn’t entertain the horse full stop.

I suppose if you thought of it like a car. I go in with an offer of the asking price minis the cost of having the defect 'fixed' and if I really like it I'd probably meet half way (asking price less 50% of the cost to 'fix')

But, as IHW says it depends how strong the market is for that type of horse

You've both reflected my thoughts. I also don't think she should drop the value as that's what he'd cost to replace (in pure money terms, he's irreplaceable to her) but she's worried she'd pay for that value in premiums only to be told he's not worth that due to the sarcoids if anything happens.

Just had this. Exact same money. Two sarcoids. One nodular and bleeding. One "mixed". Vet said at least 1k to treat. Have come up since last vetting 18 months ago.

No reduction in price.
Horse was perfect but more than I had intended to spend. Only one I have seen in 6 months that fitted my brief.
I stopped the vetting at the first stage.
Don't know if I have done the right thing. Sleepless nights. But I have had a horse with sarcoids before and swore I wouldn't buy another.

This is interesting. I have a lovely horse that I am going to be putting on the market soon. When I purchased him he had sarcoids which Ive since treated with laser (approx £1k). They haven’t returned but was expecting to have to reflect this history somewhat in price and reduce sale value to a degree. However reading this is making me think I should advertise at full current market value…
