Hyundai Santa Fe question

Right, I am getting bogged down in details and now can't see the wood for the trees!

Parkers tells me that the tow capacity of the 2.0L TD is 2300, but that the tow capacity of the 2.0L CRTD is only 1870?

I have googled a bit and it seems the original TD is only in cars pre 2003 and then they upgraded to the CRTD engine. Is that correct? ( I appreciate you have to be a bit of a geek to know this but I want to tow with it so it's important to me!) Or is it just that there was more than one option?

Can anyone shed any light on it? I'd call my Hyundai dealership but 1) they won't be open and 2) past experience of dealerships tells me they never actually know the answer to sensible questions anyway!!

I don't know the precise towing capacities BUT my car (my 1st towing car) is a Santa Fe- its a '52 plate, Automatic Petrol (2.7l, v6).

So far I have towed the following-

Ifor Williams 505 sized trailer (its a really old wessex...)with a 15.2 tb in- I forget he is on the back, just flies a long (went on the motorway yesterday and had to keep reminding myself to stay under 60), have done steep hills etc absolutely fantastic.

Richardson Supreme (I think its called that, the giant 1 that takes 2 18hhs) with a heavily sedated 17.2 irish horse in- 2 emergency trips to vets (and unfortunately only 1 return) on the motorway and on normal roads, I could feel that I was towing but still the car flew!!!

When I upgrade next year I will be getting a newer version of what I have.

Absolutely love it.

The 2.7 petrol definitely tows over two tonnes but I can't afford the fuel for that so am going to have to have a diesel, hence my question really.

Realistically I'm only going to tow one horse but if there is a difference then I'd rather have the extra weight available if it is just a matter of picking the right engine.

Why is it always so complicated?! :mad: :confused:

I have a 2007 diesel automatic. The towing capacity is 2000kg and 2200 kg for manual version. I seem to recall when I was looking that the older models didn't tow as much. My car has 2.2 CRDi engine.
 
I have a 03 Santa Fe diesel. I tow a double horse box with one horse. I have towed two horses a few times and to be honest, I didn't like it. A 2 litre engine isn't strong enough. But there is no problem at all towing 1 horse. I dont know the towing capacity, but before I bought my car 4.5 years ago I researched all this and I know that towing one horse comes in under the safety zone. I have a Cheval Liberte horse box because it's lighter than an Ifor Williams and my towing needs are relatively light. I have several friends who drive diesel Santa Fe's and they all like them. But, as I said, I wouldn't pull two horses regularly with a 2 litre engine. What I do remember from when I was looking to buy is, as a guide, you should not tow a weight that is more than 80% of the weight of the car. So mayby you can use that calculation to help you.
 
Are petrols really bad on fuel then? I genuinely did not know this. Obvisouly I felt the difference in usage between my punto and the beast but assumed it was a big engine/ 4x4 thing.

I do about 25/28 to the gallon (or so Dad says!!!)

(I think his friend is selling an '04 for £1800- but I may have misheard him)

Realistically I'm only ever going to want to tow one of mine (the thought of taking two out is just too horrific and I don't see that changing for a long time). I just wondered if there was a difference really.

Did a lot of research when I was looking to buy as wanted to get the right one, ended up with a CRTD manual as this had the best towing capacity for that year of 2.2 tonnes, mine is a slightly older model (pre-08), after this I know they have brought out a new model that can tow 2.5 tonnes, though this was beyond my price range unfortunately!

Edited to add I tow a 1 tonne IW trailer, with two smallish horses (one 500kg the other 450) and it is fine.

I can't afford as new a one even as you have but your link seems to imply what I thought. That something is different between the TD and CRTD even though they are the same size engine. Seems like I need a 2001 model if that's what I go for! Might as well have the extra capacity just in case eh?

My mum has a brand new top spec diesel santa fe and it mam towing weight is 2200kg. A vet I used to work with had an 2003 diesel one ( brand new at the time ) and this could only tow 2000kg.
