Hi

Looking to get my first tow car and considering one of these. Will only be towing 1 horse as he won't travel with company. Does anyone else tow with one of these? any comments or things to look out for good and bad?
Also how do they cope with ice and snow?
Any other recommendations? needs to be about 5K and relatively low petrol/diesel consumption as I spend a lot of commuting time in traffic jams.

I had one for about 18 months. Was towing on a daily basis with it with no problems at all. Then end of November last year, I hit a patch of ice (road not gritted) and spun around and ended up nose first in a ditch writing the car off - thankfully wasn't towing at the time. It towed effortlessly though and was very good. The only bad thing about the car was the price of the servicing and it had to be written off because of how they are made meant it would have cost a fortune taking engine and transmission out to check for further damage along the back end of the car. Genuine parts are very expensive as well but as I said, I had one for 18 months and it was very reliable and towed brilliantly.

I use one to tow one horse and it does the job well. The fuel consumption is reasonable for day to day use (for a 4x4 anyway!). Mine coped very well in the snow. Overall I'm very pleased with it.

I have diesel automatic and it tows 2k (manual 2.2k) which is more than adequate for 2 x NF ponies. It is useful to use the semi-auto if you have steep hills to climb as you can knock it down a gear rather than wait for it to do it. It also has 4WD lock for slippery surfaces and it didn't let me down in the deep snow this winter (although I obviously didn't tow with it). Had a couple of sideway slides in very deep/thick mud recently when trying to park in field so not a serious 'go-anywhere' vehicle but mud was particularly churned up - not had problems with normal field parking or slippery surfaces. Fuel economy slightly less with auto version and I think, but not certain that car tax may be in next band as emissions are slightly more than manual but that is 2007 model so might not be the case with older or newer models. Overall very happy with it but have found servicing expensive (oxfordshire) and needed brakepads doing this year (prob because of towing and automatic) but has 5yr warranty so other things covered. Like you, I needed something for commuting to work and towing and as a compromise it fits the bill.

Mine is quite old now but I still love it. Tows one horse or two ponies easily and great in the snow. These heavier cars are not good on ice though and need extra care.
