… the newest member of my family, Raphael



Since losing Tia last year, I’ve just felt like something was missing.
By chance this weekend I stumbled across a post on one of the tortoise pages I follow that a little 5-year old male horsefield tortoise was in need of a new home.
He was only an hour away so today I took a little road trip and collected him.
It feels so good to have a tortoise again!

His house is a bit bare and he needs different lamps, so that’s this week’s job.

Very smart shell! You’ll need to acquire Donatello, Michaelangelo and Leonardo, too….

Raphael has settled in very well. I got him a tortoise friendly plant for his enclosure (which he’s already eaten and destroyed ) and some other bits and bobs to amuse him.
He is much feistier than Tia was. He’s not keen on baths and he just wants to roam constantly so he gets an hour morning and evening to free roam the bedroom. They are such little characters

Yes, we have a specific tortoise area in the garden that my dad made for Tia when we had her. It’s got safe plants, flowers and lots of space to explore

Spider plants seem good. They are safe to eat and if you have one in a pot it keeps having baby plants to keep up with the munching

I joined a few FB tortoise groups when I got my first tortoise (it was through one of these that I found Raphael )

Morning. What’s your preferred set up? I don’t want to overbuy, as it’s easy to go wild in the aisles!

Some of the fb tortoise groups can be pretty harsh!
The tortoise table is a great phone app for feeding. I’ve used that a lot in the past and have learned a lot from various groups but I guess like everything you have to pick through the madness!

I got an old desk/table and we put shelving boards round the sides and a mesh top. It’s a lot bigger and once I’d painted it all the same colour a lot nicer furniture wise to have in the house. Also cheaper and much more spacious than the average pre made table you can buy.

I keep the mum plant outside and grow on the babies. Actually I did but have become lazy at it!
