I’ve just had a moment.

So it’s that time of year again and I took 3 dogs out for some training. I had them sat at a distance, dummies in place and was sending which dog to which dummy.
Suddenly 50 fat lambs arrived at a gallop, that had just been moved to that field. They are half tame and nearly ran me down. The dogs were flummoxed but thankfully stayed where they were. I had to gather them up (dogs, not sheep) and heel them out while being mobbed by hungry lambs. We made it unharmed!
I did apologise hugely to the farmer, he never minds me using his empty fields. Luckily no harm done 🙈 .
Photo taken by me as I was putting dummies out.

I presume that heel work while being mobbed by 50 hungry lambs is not something you've practised often before, so you must be so pleased with how well they behaved in that unexpected When things doesn't go according to plans-training. But I so wonder what your dogs thought, there they sat waiting like lit candles for their turn to fetch a dummy, and *boom*, lambs, lambs, and more lambs.

Like you say it all helps. Worse thing was two were back with me with their retrieves and Scout was out the far side of the field. I do love them .

I think if other things are important enough and the dogs bought up or trained doing enough to meet their drive requirements that they just don't look for anything else.
I didn't consciously train it into my terriers and calum says the same about his spaniels.
Some dogs just don't 'see' certain things, I wish lurchers were like that...

Ok… I can tell. One walk we did we dropped a car off and drove to a starting point. As we head up this little lane in my car there were 2 sheep galloping like hell towards us.
Now S is a city bod, a vegetarian and is unaccustomed to out of control farm animals. The farmer and 2 collies were chasing the sheep, the farmer in a mule. Farmer started beeping and waving, I realised what he meant and said to S… ‘open the door’… he stared at me in horror. ‘Go on’ I said, ‘quick’. He reluctantly did and said ‘what now’. ‘Get out’ I said , ‘stop those sheep’. Well… let’s just say the sheep spotted a weak link and went past like the wind.
Farmer laughed and waved and I think forgave us. 🤣

I still don't really know what I was supposed to do, a thoroughly overwhelming experience 🤣
