I am 5 ft 1 & have used a 12hh Dartmoor as my main horse while between horses, until she went symptomatic for PSSM. She was on the small side for me, but we did everything including jumping. My horse of a lifetime in my avatar was 17hh & quite strapping :) I also backed & rode my 9.2hh Shetland, & taught her some lateral work but only rode her in the school due to it all being bareback. Again, on the small side but great fun.

I'm 5ft8 and used to comfortably ride a 13.2hh Fjord. She was epic, so much fun!

The saddle can be an issue, lots of small cobs have very little space for a saddle.

I'm 5ft 7 and my fjord is 13.3, she carries me absolutely fine! I have to have a 17" saddle which means if I'm not careful my knees can be over the knee block, but we don't have any problems.

Yes I think she was in a 17" too which is a bit small but manageable for me, it is all my horse can take too. Fjords are quite well built for adult riders.

A friend of mine (much smaller than me) is struggling to find any saddle that fits her little cob that she can ride in at all, small cobs seem to have very little space for a saddle

I'm 5ft1 and my 13.2 Welsh Pony carries me all day. The only issue is when the little bugger forgets I'm there and does what he dam well wants ??

P.s controversial opinion but ponies, in my humble opinion, are WAAY more fun than horses ?

My friend had the same problem, 13.3hh traditional cob very short coupled and even her 15" saddle was slightly too long. She was 5ft and 7 1/2 st so got away with a WH saddle so her knee went slightly past the knee roll.
