I feel awful - I had a lesson booked today at 5pm but the wind here is really strong and heavy rain was forecast too. I have to hack to my lesson 25mins away and the lesson is in an outdoor menage so I rang and cancelled - I know that Jerry gets wound up in this weather and I didn't feel that we'd get the most out of a lesson if we were battling against the elements.

However - bl**dy typical of English weather - the sun has come out and it's not such bad weather at all - and it's now 5pm so we would have been ok.
My instructor (who I've only had for 3 weeks) will think I am a real wimp!

I am not usually a fairweather rider (honestly!) so I am p*ssed off with myself for cancelling today.

I still haven't made my mind up whether to try riding.

It's very windy here, but my horse lives at home & I've got a school, so not far to go... It's been raining all day, but seemed to have stopped, but just as I was about to start getting ready, it's started again.

I hate not going out, but I'm not sure how productive it would be to go & school in the wet & the wind.

Sun? Sun you say?

I had a jumping lesson today in this wind but if it had been raining I wouldn't have ridden at all. Mostly as I'm using a suede saddle and as we all know water and suede don't get on

Oh thanks - I just feel I might be a bit wimpy by not going out but I don't think it would have been a very productive lesson.

It sounds understandable, especially if it's windy - neither of you will understand (ENJOY I meant) it.
I ride in all weathers - I see my horse so little that I just ride as long as the weather it's not dangerous. She does not seem to mind at all.

ETA - God no idea why I put understand!?!?! I meant to put enjoy lol sorry!!!

it's very hard to get a horse to relax and work properly in wind and rain, so unless i have to (i.e. horse is in work for competing), i don't! have ridden one so far today, out on a hack, and he was a totally jumpy spooky idiot the whole time. still have one to do... *procrastinates*

I had the excuse of a subluxed shoulder today, but there is no way I would ride in torrential rain and howling wind - the horses hate it, and I cant be bothered to deal with all that soggy tack, boots full of water etc!

I am a fairweather rider, so what the hell I was doing at a show in the pouring rain, gales blowing and hailstones riding a recently broken 4 year old for the first time beats me totally.

My horse has had three days off now in a row - my mum usually rides her at the weekend but was working away this week, and as I work all weekend I just didn't have the time. I vowed to ride her today but took one look at the weather and decided against it

Feel a bit guilty as all she's had is fleeting visits to the field to dump carrots for her and then I've had to scarper off back to work. And now she's being hailed on

I hate riding when it's windy, my horse just spooks at everything and there are too many killer crisp packets and killer coke tins flying about for my liking !! Especially as we have to ride down a road not a good idea for him to shy and chuck me off !!

She was probably hoping you'd cancel as well ! My friend is an instructor and she was PRAYING that her lessons would cancel this morning !

Thanks to the sheer luxury of having an indoor school, I am normally not a fairweather rider....but i'm not a rider at all at the moment, as the Moose is broken.

Was gales and heavy rain all day today and although we are normally very hardy types who are not put off by its likes today was the exception! I do have a stinking summer cold as well so was probably the best choice all round. We were supposed to be doing the Milton Keyes 3DE this weekend but withdrew after a blip XC the other week, I have to say I am very pleased we didn't go!

No, I don't bother if it's raining either! Mostly because it marks my stupendously expensive saddle... Or so I tell myself. Plus I want to live...!

Well I am most definately not a fair weather rider. We don't have many days off. I am regularly seen in my waterproof chaps and jacket with Star lit up like a Christmas tree! But today...even we did not venture out. You wouldn't have got much out of your lesson in this weather anyway and I bet your Instructor didn't fancy it much either!

I am too, whats the point, if you dont have to ride - dont!

Absolutely agree...and it would have been far too dangerous to ride round here today anyway

Well, I'm just in from schooling & so glad I made the effort as we had a great time!! Didn't get wet despite it being v v overcast & the wind seemed to have died down a bit.

It's improved my mood no end as I was getting cabin fever from being stuck in the house.

I have to say that if I'd still had Cat, then I wouldn't have ridden; in fact I prob wouldn't have dared to lunge either cos he was a spooky monster & got v giddy in the wind, but luckily Adrian doesn't care about a bit of weather.

I feel much better now reading some of your responses! I must also congratulate a lot of you brave enough (or daft enough!) to venture out.
As it happens, I would have had real difficulty getting to my instructor's anyway as the lane was blocked by a fallen tree! that made me feel a whole lot better, plus the fact that I have re-booked the lesson for Weds 1pm. Please all pray for better weather - I'm going whatever!

not been raining here but the wind has been dreadful and the show I was at got cancelled half way through. Luckily Id already done my classes, would have been mightily peeved if I hadn't! Jumps were getting blown off the wings and all sorts!

You could have practised your XC on the way!
