This is the reality of breeding!!.....did u not have any homes lined up at all, when u breed from your bitch?, are they fully health tested? are u contracted back to u, if their homes fail at any stage of their lifes?
What was your reasons for breeding them, as a commonly over bred breed, maybe as suggested, the credit crunch is part of the problem.
Even though, im against un-neccesary breeding, Im Not getting at u, just questions, maybe the above has to do with your not selling them?
We just had a pregnant westi handed in to us, because they are scared of not selling, as 3 people have pulled out already and the possibility of a caesarean, which they have been told the bitch may need.......she will be spayed on monday!
Could it also be that people have taken heed not to buy puppies at Christmas time???
For all my puppies I have had to go on a waiting list to get them and only managed to get Layla this time because someone ahead of me (fortunately) dropped out
Sadly, people aren't just buying pups at the moment, quite sensible actually if they don't know what their financial situation is going to be in the coming year. I agree with Cala, dog breeding is not as simple as it appears, I always had a waiting list for pups before I even mated a bitch, but even then things can still go wrong, i.e. all dogs when people want bitches etc. If your pups were 8 weeks just before Christmas people may even have avoided them and heeded the advice of the various charities re puppies at Christmas. You might find you get more interest now the festivities are out of the way. Have youtried contacting the stud dog owner, they often get enquiries for stock by their dog, and I find our vet always used to be happy to tell people about my pups if anyone asked. Can't really offer any more help, good luck, I hope you manage to find good homes for them soon.
Sorry to be critical but as pointed out, they were 8 weeks at christmas so were you aiming for the 'christmas present' market even after all the animal welfare advice that's well advertised these days? Not much sympathy with you I'm afraid but hope the pups find homes. Maybe give them away to good homes rather than be left with them?
I don't think it's the credit crunch per se. More timing.
I bought Jasper in January 1996 and I don't remember there being a credit crunch back then. He was 8 weeks old at Christmas 1995 and his owner refused to advertise them as she didn't want them to go as Christmas presents, for obvious reasons. (I should point out it was an accidental mating between her bitch and stud dog that she wasn't aware of until she noticed the bitch looked pregnant and her son admitted to letting the dog get in with her a few weeks prior)
When January came she found to her dismay that people passed up the offer to buy one of her pups because they weren't incredibly tiny anymore and had gotten a little leggy...as pups do!
I bought him on 20th January for just £100. He has an excellent pedigree with many red names appearing throughout his certificate. She simply couldn't sell them for any more as people would rather pay more and have a titch of a pup if they're going down that route, not one a few weeks older.
We still got the same guarantee that she would have him back if it didn't work out at any point throughout his life (assuming she was still alive to have him back..I remember that being a clause!) and he was fully wormed and had received both vaccinations by the time I got him.
She really can't have made any money at all on them and quite possibly made a loss. Like all breeding, regardless of the species of animal involved, it's not a pot of cash for the breeders is it?
That happened to me Patches, I had a bitch who was very hit and miss with her seasons and I really wanted a litter from her. When she did come in the timing was such that the pups would be 8 weeks a week before Christmas. Though most were booked I wouldn't let any go until the New Year by which time they had eaten any profit I might have made
I think there were 2 unsold which I had vaccinated and ended up selling them for less than their litter mates even though they had cost me a lot more to rear.
