Today we had to move our broodmare and her 2yr old filly and yearling colt down our road a couple of hundred metres to the meadow.

We got mum to go down to the meadow gate (down the road)and try to hold the traffic up a bit so we wouldn't be cleaned off whilst walking them down, my brother did the same at the other end.

Now we live on a country road, really a big lane but as it is a "shortcut" into town people cannot be assed using the lovely, wide inviting main road half a mile up from us instead. So we pretty much live on a mini M6, cars doing 80mph+ down the hill, you get the picture.

Well, got the usual smart asses who overtook her and zoomed up towards us and then Shock Horror! actually had to wait 2 mins for younguns to get past. Now our yearling has never seen a moving car up close, so it took him a minute to see that it wasn't a fire breathing dragon and muster the courage to walk past.

I of course, coming behind get looks of death from big surly middle aged men with toddlers in the back seat, and a young woman and her mother, both wearing more make up than Bonzo the clown. Young girl then decides to rev car as hard as poss past poor yearling, who nearly has a heart attack. Meanwhile mum is bravely holdiing back a line of traffic that would put Belfast rush hour to shame by standing hands on hips!

The only courteous sensible people to actually stop and switch off their engines were a young man in his twenties and a van driver! I couldn't believe it, so I thanked them up and down.

When we got to the meadow gate, the younguns were afraid to cross the big puddle into the field and were trying to get back up past me. I am really surprised they didn't end up on the elderly lady behind my bum in a huge mercede's bonnet.

Anyway, got them into field, closed gate behind us and an absolute darling of a little boy racer with r plate deliberately drove through the big puddle as fast as he could go, and drenched poor Dad, who was feeling poorly enough as it was.
It was like the guy on the news a while back who splashed those poor people at the bus stop and put it on youtube.

I couldn't be more angry. I mean I just am lost for words to describe the stupid and ignorant people driving about country lanes. I know some people do not understand how sensitive horses are, and I can forgive that, but to deliberately splash water over someone because you were held up a few minutes is unforgiveable in my books

Sorry for the huge rant! Cadbury's chocolate for anyone who actually makes it this far awake!

Thank you guys, I was literally shaking with rage.
Stassi as far as I know it is an offence, but there's nothing I can do as I couldn't get his number as he was going so fast!
If Dad or me had stepped out of the gateway we would have been instantly killed.
This is why I can't hack on our lane

:(

I would like to join you in your lividity. There are more pillocks on the roads than ever - some unwittingly ignorant, some just thoughtless and inexcusably rude. It will take a mounted policeman to be run over whilst on duty to get any sort of legislation - such as large financial penalties, loss of licence and so on for behaving in what is essentially potential manslaughter. Most of the irresponsible driving around horses by 'townie types' is NOT accidental.

Exactly as you say stupid ignorant people but isn't deliberately splashing someone an offence?

I thought it was too, happened to me and my mum when I was a toddler

Thanks for your support:)
Believe me, if I had got a hold of him...
Really wish I got his numberplate. It just makes me sad really, that people can be so careless and nasty. Ignorance or youth is no excuse, I'm only 21 myself!

Stupid people, they're everywhere, i really do sympathise and share your rage.
Makes me angry too, there a fast lane i have to ride up to get to any good hacking and lots of big traffic goes up there. I'm getting to the point now where i'm dreading riding out because there's always something that sets the lad off and then we end up all over the road just because some pillock comes up right behind us in a massive rattling truck and doesn't slow down. Osc is getting worse the more we go out, not better

The world is full of idiots.

Brighteyes you are SO right! Putting adverts on tv doesn't seem to work. It will take something like that for something to be done. Either that, or I'll have to get a police escort to walk them down my own road.

Oh I know how you feel, We are on quite a busy A road coming out of magherafelt, And the signs are there to say horses crossing .

Still they speed up and overtake on that part of the road .

Now missy is very good crossing the road, I wear hi viz when I put her out, I have the jacket on and another hi viz jacket in my hand to slow the traffic .
One particular incident I was crossing the road, Both sets of traffic stopped, The car in behind the car that had stopped first decided he wasn't going to wait and proceeded to overtake .

He then had to break and nearly missed me and missy .

I swear ...WHAT POSSESSES PEOPLE ? I seriously think that these sort of people are just ignorant to the fact that they don't know what horses can be like . They are not cows who can ... most of the time be placid and not care what traffic is behind them .

Horses will jump on your bonnet or kick out if you get too close !!!

PASS WIDE AND SLOW NUMPTIES !!

Just for the record .....I always thank drivers that slow down and put my hand up .

All I know is I can't afford the petrol to drive 80mph everywhere, and I see no sense in doing it. You will catch up with the car doing 40mph at the next junction/traffice lights whatever anyway. And unless everyone today were rushing to get to the maternity ward at the hospital, they had no reason to get that agitated.

Thanks for sympathising everyone. God I wish more drivers owned horses, or should be made to walk them down a busy road to see what its like!

Poor cow-men too though, it's not just us. People don't realise that these creatures can kill you if you hit them!

next time bring a pen and paper and take down some number plates......if nessecary report for dangerous driving.

The more reports made about horse related incidents on the roads in the country overall the more seriously the issue will be taken....

id be livid what a twat!

Absolutely flipping disgusting. Poor you and how stressful for everyone (poor youngsters included) just because a few P.I.N.A.'s could not be bothered to show a couple of minutes patience. Yeah, it would have made my blood boil, too.

God I wish you'd gotten that pillock's registration number - the one that raced through the puddle on purpose. Flipping %$£*@!

I am sure today is the day for complete tossers to be out on the roads.

My road is similar to yours, a single track country lane that goes for about a mile up to a small twisty village before going out to the main road. I had pulled out from my house [no traffic in sight] and was speeding up to about 40 when a Mercedes roared up behind me going at least 70, ridiculous considering there is a right angle bend about 300m back so they must have had the foot flat to the boards. They proceeded to sit on my tail all the way up the road, and when I slowed down to 20/30 for the extremely tight bends in the village they got right up my bumper, started making obscene gestures, and then zoomed past me on the first available straight bit, and accelerated to at least 50, still in the middle of a quiet country village.

I just don't know what the problem is with some people

- they don't own the road just because they have a big swanky car.

Your experience sounds horrible, people are so damn stupid, don't they realise how dangerous it is to act that way around horses? I really hope karma catches up with them - preferably without involving an innocent bystander
frown.gif

How horrid for you! especially with young neds as well!
frown.gif

My old ponio was really really spooky in traffic and some people made me furious the way they drove!! A little bit of courtesy wouldnt hurt them would it??!!

I empathise so much Alicat! Am so livid for you too and your poor pa. I hope Karma comes back to haunt the guy that did it.

I am so so so so so so fed up of ignorant drivers that I have almost given up hacking all together. We were actually hit about a year ago waiting at traffic lights. Thankfully it was not serious but the foreign driver's excuse was that he didn't know horses were allowed on the road as they aren't in Romania ----- that's no *^&*ing reason to drive into them!!! What if toddlers weren't allowed on the road in Romania - would you run them over!!!!!!!????????

I really think that the government/DVLA/BHS etc etc needs to redouble efforts to make sure drivers know how to deal with horses on the road. I swear things have got worse over the past few years. I wonder what the rate of horse/rider/vehicle accidents is compared to a few years ago....

What the Fek, heard it all now, isn't their electricity generated by a Donkey going round in circles tied to a rope, last time they had a power cut it was sabotage, someone put Horlicks in the Donkeys feed, jeeeeeeez, as if we havent got enough of our own morons, we let foreign morons onto our roads as well now, does anyone actually "check" these twats have a licence
mad.gif
probably on their way to ram raid a cash machine and were in a hurry.

... and then there's the way you're treated when driving a horsebox/trailer. It's 2 1/2 miles from the main road down a narrow (almost single track) lane to the village where I keep my boy. Coming back from lessons etc in the evening, there's always some t*ss*r attached to the rear of my trailer with his lights on full beam trying to either get past me or make me pull over. Following me at 30mph rather than 50mph makes them approximately 3 minutes later for their first gin and tonic. Rant over!

Feel for you Alicat, so glad you are ok (well, not physically hurt). It could have been a very different outcome.

So sick of these idiots, I've had stand up rows with driving instructors on two seperate occasions when one let his student drive into my arm (I was leading my son on his shetland at the time) and the other was driving the car himself and tried to remove my right leg whilst I was on board.

If they don't know how to deal with horses and riders on the road what hope is there for those being taught by them?????

Sending soothing vibes out to you all xxxx

Good Lord, and I thought it was bad here in Italy!! I havent ridden on the roads for centuries and have no intention of doing so unless its unavoidable. I love my horse and I quit smoking so why the hell would I want to risk being killed by an idiot driving a car. Here in sunny Italy, indicators are optional, blowing ones horn is obligatory and is expected when traffic lights are red, there is a dead granny in the middle of the road and ambulance is in process of scooping her up etc. If the Italians made love like they drive........the female Italians would all be abroad by now.
grin.gif

PS, come to think of it, a lot of them are!
