Nitty got kicked on the hock two weeks ago. The vet came out and she had three days of Trim. Some of the swelling went down but the cut was still quite open and swollen. Two days ago finally the wound was starting to look good but now she's knocked the top of again and is swollen all down to her fetlock. This sounds awful but there is no heat in it and she still isn't lame. I don't know whether to get the vet back out or not. What can they actually do. I don't see any signs of infection (TPR normal, no heat at the injury sight, horse bright and eating). How can it be that swollen still when there doesn't seem to be anything the matter?

I've brought her in to try and stop her pulling it open but now the little monster is weaving like a good un and I want to tear out my hair! Horrible TB. Why won't it just mend!!

The swelling won't help it healing either as it'll stretch the skin.

Have you tried taking her out for a walk, short hack, this should help bring the swelling down, as she doesn't seem to be lame it won't do any harm.
If she is lame on it then get off.

My gelding had a really swollenn leg due to a kick wasn't lame etc.... heat stopped after a few days but swelling still there, i took him out for a short hack and swelling went right down three days of this it went completely, sometimes the sweeling will go quicker with movement.

I don't see how it sounds like there is an infection in there. It is up and down quite randomly. Sometimes it looks ok and sometimes it looks big. It'll go right down and then flare right back up again. I might be expecting too much but I would expect an infection to get progressively worse over time rather than go up and down. The lack of heat is also really what's baffling me. And the lack of illness/lameness.

I will call the vet and see if she wants to come back out or not. The horse balloons at the slightest knock so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that she is still swollen. This is why my horses don't wear shoes. They make such a blooming mess when they go at each other!

It probably fluid from not moving around.
Take her for a walk or turn her out.
You said she has started weaving so keep it clean and put her out, she will be much happier.

Sorry, should have explained. She's been out until yesterday. The swelling was going down nicely and then she's gone and been a tit in the field and knocked the top off the cut. Now it's swollen again and so she's in!!

Bloomin pesky animal. Am off to call the vet now to get her opinion!

When you say weaving, is she on box rest? Horses, as you know, are designed to move around a little most of the day and plenty will swell if kept in even with no injury... Is it possible to turn her out in a small area (check with vet by phone?) or does she really need to be in?

ETS: just read you second post. Please ignore the above as you clearly did have her out before.

Vet again :-(

Good luck!

She is in today as she has the farrier but have spoken to the vet. As there is no heat she's going back out tonight to see if she makes any effort whatsoever to mount some kind of immune response, other wise the vet is back tomorrow.

Daft filly. I don't know why I have these TB things. I should get a cob!
