I am Fuming -BE Trainer - How rude!!!

She was there in a professional capacity, that's how I knew who she was, she had a tabbard with her name on it

In that case I recant my earlier post; I thought she was just spectating.

But, at the same time I can understand her frustration with those that just do not have the capabilities to be there. There should be a minimum standard that all should have reached to even enter a training day let alone a proper event. Whether that be PC or RC tests or a BE assessment I don't know but some of who you see are appalling. Still, I suppose BE would lose a lot of money if they did that.

I understand what you are saying but if she feels this way she should simply not be involved in the 80T classes. No one has forced her to be there, to profess to be a 'Trainer', to be there in a professional capacity to offer help and advice and then behave in that way is appauling.

Oh Dear!
well this is just outrageous! people do BE80s to gain their confidence, IMPROVE THEIR RIDING and begin to have fun doing something they love.
Yes their are people who need a lot of work but thats why we have accredited trainers!!! If I heard someone talking about me like that I wouldn't even want to go into the arena! They are there to coach and help riders at events not take the total mickey!!

I have hummed and haa'd over this thread all morning and decided that ;

a) the T means that there is a Rep there to guide you around the ins and outs of your early eventing experiences...NOT undo all your old habits and perform miracles

b) you can choose whether to take anything they say on board ...or not

c) I'd far rather someone tells me the hard facts of a situation than show the type of indifference that helps no one and

d) I like people with dry/rude senses of humour

and as such if someone had stood beside me and mauled the people in the collecting ring, I would have either turned to them and said "just as well you are only a BE trainer and not a Samaritan" or "if you think THEY are bad, you should see the recovering alcoholic theyve got as thier Coach".

But then thats just me...

Absolutely love it!! :D:D:D:D

Agree with A,B, C, and D although she wasn't telling the hard facts to the people in question just slagging them off from the side lines.
What she is done is the equivalent of me as a teacher going to a School event, pointing out kids to a random adult and saying "Check him out he's a border line 'tard, there's no point in trying to teach him anything. Tying his laces is beyond him, he still wears velcro shoes" If I did that and got reported I'd get sacked and I'd deserve it.

Not only rude, but unprofessional and really very stupid. Especially if you are going about and mouthing off with your NAME written all over you...............

Quite, if you are going to slag people off you think she'd be sensible enough not to do it while advertising who she is!

I dont think she actually said anything that bad, if Im honest. Although, yes, if she had pointed to a child and said the tard word, I would expect a public flogging.

She didnt say she wouldnt try and teach them or say anything was beyond them (that would require an element of imagination) but she gave what is her own personal opinion on what she was actually seeing. Admittedly she must have been a loony tune to say it outloud and maybe someone should tap her on the shoulder and remind her that if her mouth is moving whilst having such thoughts, it may be that noises are coming out.

Ofcourse, back in my day she would have said it in a loud booming voice for everyone to hear, wear balloon breeches and shout Tally Ho everytime one of her protegy approached the fence.

Theres a lot to be said for people who still have a quirky personality these days... half of whats wrong with this country is that we are afraid to express opinions for fear of offending someone. I certainly wouldnt want a teachers job.... !!

ETA; Can I just say BRAVO to the OP's other half... if it was mine, he would have waded in with some equally crass and badly thought out comeback that would have landed him with an ASBO.

Well no she didn't say anything as bad as that I'm exaggerating for effect, and she's entitled to her opinion but the point is she shouldn't be offering it unsolicited when she is at the event in a professional capacity. I have no problem with people who are direct, sometimes something does need to be said. If that is the case it should be either to the individual concerned or the BE officials. From what the OP said and the fact she was saying it to a random person on the side lines, I think she was just being a colossal cow. She is not a good abasador for the Event or the sport and should be spoken to about maintaining professional standards.
Echo what you've said about the Other half though very dignified response :)

The comp world is full of big mouths who are happy to slag people off forgetting they werent all that when they were learning the ropes.
I can also say though that ive had some lovely people around me most times ive been out and about, my first 80T was a great experience, the coach was great, chatted away trying to put us at ease and did so with a good sense of humour, but mostly the message was, go out and enjoy yourself and "if in doubt, kick it on" :D

I agree with Mrussell about people telling it like is & if this trainer was saying directly to the competitors things like
'I think this horse needs a little more work on the basics such as grid work before competing seriously'
Or
'It might be worth spending more time at unaff to get over your nerves'
I would actually applaud them that finally someone was addressing the issues of poorly prepared horses/riders at the lower BE levels
But this isn't what was happening was it? The situation as relayed by the OP was nothing more than a bit of nasty bitching.

It's people like that who make me never want to leave the yard! Although I don't doubt for a second that some people should be doing more training/lessons/work at home, I do think that it's amazing how people will automatically brand you as a terrible rider just by watching a 3 minute show jumping round.

If she thought the showjumping was bad she ought to have seen my dressage! I got lost twice lol

Unfortunately in life there is always somebody who will try to ruin or belittle somebody else's dream. So long as the horses are not suffering, people should be encouraged to give their horsey dream a go. Some professionals can be rather supercilious towards amateurs, best to ignore it and keep plugging away :-).

Can't help but agree with Mrussell and Maesfen's sentiments here. So the professional probably shouldn't have been voicing her thoughts aloud... but then again, there is an issue with the base level of knowledge of a minority of people out competing. I still think there should be better structures in place for encouraging people to learn and improve so this sort of situation can be avoided.

I agree. If she doesn't think people are up to standard then she should say so. But she should tell them, to their faces, politely and quietly rather than slagging them off in public.

But.... BE80 is the smallest safest option riders have. RC/PC Novice starts at 90 - and those courses apart from being bigger are not always the best built.

This sort of behaviour is one of the reasons I have struggled for years with my nerves as I always worry what nasty comments someone may be making about my riding (not that I am brave enough to jump any longer !) At the end of the day we ride for enjoyment and all have to start somewhere. 80 training is the very start of eventing so BE should ensure that the trainer is someone appropriate & encouraging. Hope you enjoyed yourself anyway.

Well put it this way, i was at this event and i did ask for help from the person in question as to the best line to ride show jumping. Had i of known what she thought of the 80 riders i would never b of asked for help through fear of her belittling me which would of defeated the object of the trainers being there.

There was one poor last who fell apart at the start of the xc and couldn't get her horse over the first fence. The accredited trainer there at the time was brilliant and offered some great advise to encourage the lady to keep trying in the future! She most certainly didn't

Sorry.....
She most certainly didn't make fun of the lady or question why she was there. Evidence that some trainers do appear to want to help :)
