I am going to scare you all in 12 mths time!!

With insurance we are up to £493.14:D

Overheard at Holmfirth unwarranted horse auction;
2 'dodgy dealer' types, "Well, if you don't count keep.........". There was no sarcasm or laughter, this was a genuine discussion about the profit made on the sale of a pony.

If they can ignore the cost, I'm sure the likes of us non-dodgy HHO members can!

Never mind in 12 months time, you've frightened me witless today! :D

I am now going to close my eyes, stick my fingers in my ears and go lalalalala

I think you are madddd but its is really very interesting.

I am always shocked at how many people get horses without realising the financial implications .... and then get in awful muddles. This could be a really interesting reference.

But Mints????? Do you deduct 1p if you eat one yourself?

And I think it would be OK to add a bottle of Gin on the list, after all with a youngster there are times when it is a need not a want!

The first 3 months when we were taming him, Tesco own Extra strong mints 4 packets for for £1.09..... these basically saved our life lol.... panicky horse snatching at mints as he was so greedy, really helped, i reckon he must have eaten 40 packs lol...... so i shall not be deducting for the ones I have stolen.

I too think it will be interesting this is why I am listing every single thing, as it's very easy to leave out the odd £s. XX

You wait until I start buying saddles hehe.. To be fair I don't waste money and always buy the cheaper option if feesable, so I should give you all an accurate price for someone on a budget! X

I have a little hard backed book, and this little hard backed book is going to terrify you all so badly, in fact you will probably have sleepness nights that I might show your OH's it's contents, in fact you would probably be too scared to look yourselves!!!

I am recording EVERY SINGLE PENNY I am spending on Freddie from the day I have owned him (January)......................

Be afraid!!

that's a good idea but I would run out of pages and have a nervous breakdown:eek:

Please do not show Nick - he is unaware of what I spend :) I would not like to add up what we spend - ignorance is bliss hehe.
Am busy selling old rugs so I can buy more, two horses cost me a fortune.

Ah, accountancy! I used to run a large-ish stud farm (20 broodmares, 3 stallions), so am familiar with EXACTLY how much it costs to "run" a horse, including water, electricity, rates, etc. Which is why I no longer attempt to make living breeding, training or selling horses. So the next time you ask why a nice 3 year old costs £7,000+ , give a thought to the poor breeder/producer who is trying to break even, because realistically that is all they are going to do at that price.

HEHE that's true I actually have access to your husband, so could produce the book!! Be afraid!

That is a very fair point, people just don't realise! X

A good few years ago when I worked in a saddlery/feed store people still used cheques and it was amazing how often customers 'forgot' where they were and wrote Tesco or Sainsburys on the cheques book stub!!!

And then , when you have added your total , add to it the interest you would have received on the money if you had put it in a savings account. Also remember wear and tear on your car- petrol- telephone.

Then when you add it up and you have all that money , you know that all you would do with it is go and get a horse.

Back in the days when I only had one, I used to write everything down, including fuel, and lorry maintence, fuel entry fees etc. I stopped when I bought number two, well three really, but ponio was out on loan so didn't count.

Don't worry it's all ok shhhhhhh now sit down and the lovely men will be here to take you for a ride on their mini bus to your special hotel.............. :D

HEHE think I wil just revive this thread incase anyone hasn't been terrified yet! OMG at Pixies!!!! Freddie is hardly costing me anything because he is out 24/7 and not ridden yet, but still surprised it's £500 already not counting livery and fuel! X

I was once contacted by an equestrian company doing a telephone survey on this subject

As I replied to their questions on various costs associated with my 2 per year, I started totting up in my head ..... I lost count after about £10000 ... :o

no way am I including the cost of buying new donks

Not a good idea i did mine purely on livery including just hay and shavings and over about 6 months and that came to about £2000 dread to think how much it would be including shoeing, vet and all accessories that hes just got to have!

This is like counting calories on a pre-mensutral eating day!!! Somethings are better off not knowing!! Although this time last year I had 4 in livery and now just 1 so I think i'm winning

I've just started to do this, working backwards month by month, and have now got to go and have a lie down after doing just June!! Its been an expensive month, as rugs have worn out (after at least 3 seasons wear, so not that bad) and the injections were due, but heck!!! And I have my own yard, so don't pay livery!!

20 bales of hay, 20 bales of straw £160
Farrier x 2 £130
2 x lightweight turnouts £80
2 x sweet itch hoodies £200
Monthly insurance £67 (includes trailer)
Injections (about) £150 (one was sedated to pull mane too)

Total for June £787!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:
