Horrible thing was on one tonight and decided to do his setting his neck and trotting off back to the stables trick. I nearly managed to shove him into the fence but he just got away from me. So him and then Nitty (because she is young and impressionable) had me running between them whilst they tried to trot off, squeezed like a burger in a bun. I had to let go when we got to the corner and ended up sailing into the bramble bush. Caught them up and they came in fine. He really bl00dy annoys me when he's like this. He's been so good for ages (well 6 wks which is forever in his world) and then he just has to go and ruin it because he's in a mard due to being out late.

So my Nits has picked up a nasty habit, I am covered in scratches and my bad knee really, really hurts from running through sticky mud.

Humph!

Does anyone have a gun I could borrow? :D

He does it whatever you put him in. Believe me I have tried :D We have had normal headcollar, be nice headcollar, normal bridle, chiffney. When he is in a bad mood there is no stopping the big so and so. And he knows how to be good as well little monkey. 99% of the time now he is angelic and walks beautifully, stops when I stop and is generally a helpful chap. Which makes it even more infuriating when he decides to pitch me into the thorns!!!
 
It's Okay, Len refused to be caught this evening. Until I left him out, alone :D it started to get cold and dark and he was soon stood at the gate shouting at me. So, if you can come catch Len, I'll come help you bring in. Deal? :D
 
Naughty boy!!!

Have you tried him in a Dually headcollar? I had a cob who 90% of the time was angelic but every now and then he would decide to disappear off in what we called his power trot - just like you've described your boy doing - neck set, nose on chest and then gone in a great ground covering trot! ( Funny how he could never do it in a dressage arena) The Dually was the only thing I could hold him in and the look on his face when he realised he couldn't get away was priceless.

I've tried sadly. But you describe what he is doing to an absolute t. They're just horrible aren't they? He never does under saddle either :(
 
Put a chain through my mares headcollar over her nose,to lunge line so when she tanked off, she was hurting herself, worked wonders, so stopped useing it, until till yesterday and today getting her in, she's soft on her right side but sets her neck on the left and I only have short legs, so tomorrow night the chain back on, till she learns yet again.:):):)

because I struggle to keep anything wrapped round his nose (because he constantly tries to rub it off, he isn't stupid!) if it isn't fixed down.

He does learn his lesson and then forgets again. Or rather decides to flout the rules again more like.I should give up trying to teach him and just keep him pinned down just incase.

And blimey Mrs M. You definitely win. And he looked so cute in the photo you posted recently!
 
My horse does exactly the same, always has, I've had him since he was 4 and he's now 19!!! God knows why he does it, like yours he is great when saddled and he actually is very sociable and loves people and is 'in' to everything. However, everyso often when being lead he will just get into a position where he will set his head and neck and just p*ss off! As I know him so well I normally know what mood he's in (he has a certain look in his eye) but he still caught me off guard the other day and did it just as I got near to the gate!

I bought myself an eskadron chain headcollar a few years ago and it was a godsend. Sir can not now b*gger off as a quick pull on that and he stops! sadly he managed to break it a while back (he was tied up and the rope wasn't switched from the chain ring to the normal headcollar ring - I didn't tie him up!) so i have gone back to lead rope over the nose for the time being.

You should try it see if it works. i don't think a dually or other control headcollar would work on mine (although he is perfectly leadable in a bridle no probs).
 
Thanks ladyt25. Good to get a positive review. I've been umming and ahhing over it for a few months now but he really p'd me off today so that's it!

I can always tell when he's in a mood too. He isn't very subtle! He'll probably be back to his usual cheery self tomorrow I expect. Funny creatures aren't they? God knows what goes on in their brains!
 
Forget all the 'Monty Roberts', 'Parelli' and 'Kelly Marks' stuff...what you need is a barbed wire bit.
They sell them in the local co op year in Wales...bargain price of £5 and you can also get one in rust...I mean sweet iron...works a treat on the cob stallions!!!!!!:)

Were you leading them both at the same time???

Would maybe recommend if your horse can be a git not taking two at a time, kind of setting yourself up for a fall really especially if one is only a baby.
 
They're quite funny really - obliging 95% of the time then it's like they just like to remind you that actually they can do what the heck they like and there's not an awful lot you can do about it! Lol

They always come in together yeah. He is usually a very good baby sitter. He just has a brain fart every now and again. At some point she will have to learn to ignore him because I'm not making two trips for the rest of forever. The track absolutely knackers my knee just doing it the once. The idea of doing it twice every evening makes me want to cry!
 
Well at least it proves he isn't completely brain dead and has some sense of humour. He's so quiet to ride that I sometimes think he is a robot! :D
 
This is known at our house as being the scabby horse between two bread vans :D :D The two known as the Pink Pair were beggars for doing the squishing you between them, mainly instigated by the Appy, who told the other one what to do, they did it simply for fun, the Appy had a rather sense of humour :D
 
There's something in the air at the moment I think. My lot are all daft at present, and yesterday I was kicked BY TWO OF THEM :o one was 17.1hh and didn't really hurt me (caught me on my backside) but the other was 36" high Shetland, and he got my hand which really hurt and even drew blood :eek:

I'll be right behind you at the hunt with a lorry load ;)

Hope you things improve for you, get some witch hazel on those scratches! x
