I made a post earlier in NL about charging for a horse in livery here for 2 weeks. I charged £10 a day plus expenses at cost price such as food, shavings and hay. I can't tell you how much I put myself out to make their stay here enjoyable, hassle free and over the years we have become good friends. Also I sorted out an emergency plumber when there was a leak, I turned off the water etc, etc and am generally there on call. (the leak happened on a hunting morning but I still managed to get all horses plaited and turned out in time).

Anyway he told me he thought £10/day was too much and it really should only be £8 tops. I said I was sorry that he thought I had overcharged him and agreed to knock £28 off the bill (ie £2/day) but did point out that before he arrived I had to prepare his stable, get the food, order in extra hay and when he goes I will have to clear out his stable etc, that I groomed and cleaned the tack daily, I plaited twice for hunting, he did however give my daughter £10 because she came down in the evenings to help out.

I am so upset that a man with that much money would quibble over £2 a day when I have looked after his horse when he visits for years, he knows I am very efficient and good with horses and I feel everything is done to a high standard.

I really feel that when he comes in Sept (with another family and 4 other horses) I might suggest he finds someone else to groom but am really loathe to fall out with him.

Sorry its such a long post!

So this was £10 a day and you did everything the horse needed to be look after and taken out hunting ? plus cost price on feed and beddding?
Sounds like a bargin to me , I mean it must have taken more than a couple of hours every day and the minimum wage is over £5 an hour and that's without general wear and tear on your yard.

Tell the tight wad to do one, you can earn better money. I pay £10 for my tack to be cleaned so by way of comparison he is totally taking the p**s and if a tenner is too much he'll just have to sort himself out. I have no time for these sorts of folks and you should follow my example

No I didn't agree a price in advance (probably a mistake) but I have known him for years and I just look after his horse and charge what I think is reasonable - he has never mentioned this before and I don't think the bill was any more this time than before anyway. He has never looked after his horse before because he has a live in paid groom so I don't think he realises how much work is involved.

The touble is I have so much work on at the moment that I really struggled to fit this in and the horse is huge and I am only little so the whole thing is such hard work. It just wasn't worth the effort.

You have not overcharged him & really you shouldn't have given him the discount that he asked for.
If I was you I would write to him basically stating what you have here. Tell him his request for a reduction in the bill caught you by surprise, & if he choses to return to you again the charge will be £10 (or whatever) per day. Itemise exactly what looking after the horse entailed with an approximation of how long each task takes - for instance grooming & cleaning tack after hunting takes a lot longer than it does after hacking.
Keep the letter cool & professional, but make it clear that his attitude has upset you, & that you feel the best way to avaiod any misunderstandings in the future is to agree the charges in advance.

Well I charge 15 per day per horse over here; however I do always state the price upfront IN WRITING. If he decides to come back in September make sure you email him with the cost.

Sounds like a bargain to me too! I would say when he preparing to come again that the fee is £10 a day per horse plus costs, if he says anything say, I think it will be better if you stable elsewhere in the interest of not damaging our friendship any further! Either that or give him a breakdown of charges before he comes, like mucking out £4 per horse, groom per horse £4, feeding and watering and nets £4 per horse, plaiting £4 per horse! I put £4 for everything because you have to work out how much you are going to charge!

The more money they have the tighter they are and the more likely they are to quibble over the pennies in my experience!

I've paid between £15 and £18 per day for full livery when I've gone on holiday - this is to include exercising too.

I think £10 is about right, don't do it for less next time !!

I would write to him saying basically what you have said here. Tell him that you think the reduction he asked for & received was uncalled for & if he thinks heb can get hisn horses looked after better & cheaper then he is free to take them somewhere else. If he wishes for you to look after them again in the future then the price you ask for is the price to be paid.

This person is trading on friendship....he isn't a friend doing this....he's just a penny pincher.

I went to my friends Hunt/Livery Yard this afternoon and they agreed with all of you that what I charged was very reasonable and it was very unfair of him to argue the price. They know that people like me who are experienced, knowledgeable and reliable are a dying breed round here and hard to find.

I have been really miserable all day thinking about this and it has left a bitter taste to think that he does not think me worth £10 a day.

I think I will tell him I am too busy when he comes in Sept and save any falling out.

I think he got a very good deal and would like to compare your charges with a hunting yard..
I certainly wouldn't accommodate his horses again, just say you are full up. Cheeky so and so!
Next time agree a fixed price prior to anyone arriving, it stops things like this happening.

I think a tenner a day is incredibly reasonable! I'd snap your hand off for that.
I would be too full/ too busy when next he needs you, or charge him the real going rate

ten pounds a day is reasonable enough!, I pay my YM £7 a day to look after my horse....MOST days a year!!!! that is only muck out, turn out and bring in. No tack cleaning (i hunts and do the cleaning after muddy day!!!) No Plaiting (i Plait!) No Grooming (I groom)....

Don't be taken advantage of....

Don't even get me started on people tearing the pee out of you when it comes to looking after their horse

I think that £10 per day is very cheap, especially when you have done all of the extras too. Definatley get a price agreed in writing before September or just tell him that you are too busy. He'll see the real cost of full livery then

Try not to get to upset about it, keep yur chin up

When Joya came in the summer the cost of the stable and shavings was £20 per DAY, nothing included in that at all! My current YO charges £12.50 per day for visiting horses, NO riding.

I think £10 per day for your services was more than reasonable. Services such as bathing, plaiting, holding horse for vet etc are charged for on our yard, I think he was being bloomin cheeky!

Don't be offended.

A lot of people can not help themselves. They have to knock down the price!! The thing is, it worked for him didn't it? He saved a tidy little sum. He has probably done this all of his life.

Charge him £12 a day next time
