I am sure this has been covered many times... How much do you pay for a set of shoes?

I have just called a new farrier here in Gloucestershire to ask him to come and shoe my mare....£96 for a set!!

Now if she needed remedial shoeing etc that might be ok but it sounds like a bl**dy fortune for a normal set of shoes! :eek:

How much does everybody else pay and where are you located?
 
That seems steep:eek: I pay £75, one of my liveries uses a different farrier and pays £65 for a normal set, stud holes an extra £1 per hole. Somerset.

£60 full set new
£55 full re tread as I call it! lol... but same shoes, ie ponies dont do much road work etc

£95ish for not exactly remedial shoeing, as we are out of that stage now (was up to £220 a set at one time!), but for one of the best of the best farriers in the country, and that horse is on a 5 week rota.
 
I just paid £60 for a set and £40 for front and trims behind around the Birmingham Area,

there is one farrier who charges £60 for fronts so dread to think how much for a set
 
p.s. I have 2 farriers, and my more expensive one, other than being simply excellent, also charges VAT, many arent registered for VAT
 
I use Stuart Black very good, he always turns up on time and has never let me down. :)

Its mad that its cheaper to drive from Gloucs to Warks!?! :eek: How do farriers come up with their charges? :confused:
 
Had mine done today. The one out eventing is £70 (new set and stud holes), the one in light work was £55 - reused old shoes all round.
 
I paid £105.60 for my last set of re-fits, which breaks down as £65 for the refits, £8 for road-nails, £15 for travel and £17.60 VAT in East Sussex
 
My farrier charges £60 for a new set, and £10 per horse for a trim, just think the farrier I had as a child charged me £1.10s for a full set for my pony, how times have changed :)

Doing a ring around now to try and find a more sensible price! Why is nothing in life simple....
 
£60 in warwickshire but he mentioned his prices going up soon to £65/70. I also know a farrier who will do a full set for £50 but showed up 2 hours late once, and another who charges £95 excluding VAT.

If you can transport your horses to Warwickshire College (Moreton Morrell) and don't mind waiting round for a couple of hours, you can get your horses done cheaply/free (can't remember which) by the students, all fully supervised. Phone the campus number and ask to be put through to the horse unit and they can give you more info.
 
Mine has just gone up from £70 to £75 a set including specially hand made hind shoes and stud holes all round. It's the same all year round regardless of stud holes or not.
The difference this farrier has made to my cob is unbelievable - he's never had brilliant feet especially hinds but now we're really getting somewhere.
Actually, he's just rung me as his builders have somehow wiped my cob's measurements off his whiteboard (!) - he needs me to measure the shoes so he can reorder the correct width of steel to make a batch of hind shoes ready for the next 6 months :)
 
Why is £100 or thereabouts too much to pay for a decent job and a sound horse?

A vet call out for a routine jab sometimes costs as much but I don't see many people complaining.
 
I have to say that, as with many things, it's not always a case of 'cheaper is better'. I'd be very very cautious of changing farriers just because of the cost. A good farrier is worth their weight in gold, in my opinion.

Haha!! I wondered how long it would take for someone to come up with a bitchy comment!!! :rolleyes:

Please go away, I have no interest in your opinion. Fed up of the completely unnecessary nastiness on this forum.
