I called 999 today - Please fence your ditches :(

The feeling of helplessness is so horrible in these situations:(, thank goodness you got it sorted sucessfully, hopefully she will make a good recovery x

So glad that you found her in time OP and very well done for staying calm and doing all the right things for this mare.
Fingers crossed for a quick recovery for her and I agree please keep us all updated on her progress if that is ok, x

I have never known time go so slowly and the relief of seeing the pieces of the jigsaw finally coming together was immense.

What is most heart warming was complete strangers coming to help. We have only been here a few years so are still classed as newcomers :) yet people came when I called - I had to call people I didn't know and remember phone numbers people told me as I had no pen and paper and through my wobbly voice managed to explain the situation.

Even those who didn't have the equipment suggested those who could and the lady who found the tractor in the end did so off her own back as a fellow horse owner. we didn't know this chap was even coming he just turned up it was such a huge relief. It was amazing.

I have thanked everyone I could at the time but will of course follow up with a card and wine / chocs or flowers as appropriate. It seems so isignificant compared the the huge kindness they gave but I hope they also get great pride from knowing how their actions helped the dear old girl.

I would also like to write a peice for the horsey mags to try and raise awareness firstly of who to call as I was unsure if I was going to get told off for dialling 999 for a horse, but also to try and avoid the situation occuring in the first place, but don't know where to start. The vets took pics throughout as they train the emergency services so I am sure they would let me have copies if it was to help make owners aware too. Anything I can do to stop others suffering this would make something good come from an awful situation.

Apologies for rambling !

Quick update.

Vet been and did full check up and took and has subsequently run the blood tests. All clear and suprisingly good for a mare of her age and poor body condition.

So outcome is to feed her up on conditioning cubes, sugar beet and ad lib good quality haylage. I have added some micronised linseed for good measure :)

Owner was hunting her full days and it has taken it's toll as he wasn't putting the right fuel in. But now we have the green light to feed her up and enjoy her.

I had a similar situation to this, came across a pony with its back legs wrapped round and round in barbed wire.. poor thing was distraught and exhasuted. Its horrible to see things like that... so I completely agree with you, fence ditches... and don't keep horses in any form of wire fencing.. its so dangerous!

Pleased she's okay. Been thinking about her since you first posted! Thanks for the update, give her a pat from me!! :)

what a lucky horse that you had the sense to check on it. What a nightmare for you and at least it sounds like the horse will be ok. Especially if they stood and went to the stable.

All I can say is one lucky horse! Well done for being so prompt and getting help out. Thats what 999 is for.
