I can start looking for a doggie!

Both myself and my OH have been wanting a dog together ever since we moved in together (4 years ago) but due to renting we've never been able too.

So now we actually have our own place, we can start looking

Its only looking and gettin ideas atm as OH is just about to leave his job to run his own business and I've been made redundent so am looking for work. And what with all the c**p I've been through recently OH thought it would be something nice/fun for me to do.

Because my OH will be working for himself in an industrial unit, the dogs can go with him to work. I'm looking for a PT job 2-3 days a week so the dogs can come with me to the yard on my days off.

Does this sound ok? Obviously we will not be getting doggies until work/time etc is all settled down and we have a routine.

Ideally we would prefer to get a rescue dog at first. We've both had terriers when younger (me a JRT and OH a Cairn).

The evergrowing shortlist is as follows- in no particular order:
Border collie
GSD
Ridgeback
Greyhound
Retriver/ Lab
Springer

Thoughts most welcome on these breeds. We would like to take doggies to training classes and possibly agility/ obedience for fun and to help with training- obviously if doggie wants to that is.

Well from your list..............I would choose either a GSD or GREYHOUND..........no reason just my personal preferance within the choice range

We currently have 2 greyhounds
A shepherd and a chocci lab in our rescue at the mo

and a border colli(a little elderly at 7)

If you go for 2 and u want to do agility......get a greyhoundand leave it at home to lounge on the bed.......and get one of the other chosen breeds to take to agility

I think having more than one dog is a good idea as they amuse themselves, well mine do!! Rescue dogs may have more issues than others so maybe two that already kennel together?? Personally from your list I would go for RR but I am biased 'cos I have one and I love her. Very loyal and affectionate but also active. Good luck with your dog hunt!!

Actually do you still have Baloo? Not got Old English Sheepdog on my list I know (on my slightly longer shortlist though LOL) but OH really likes him.

Not 2 puppies no. BTW this is coming from the person whos way of easing herself back into horse ownership was to buy a preggers chestnut tb

Seriously though I wouldnt really consider 2 puppies but 2 rescues who were used to each other I would. We would like 2 eventually to have 1 each so to speak and could do different things with (ie aglity with one, obedience with other). But thats something else to really think about.

I'll get the greyhound for my OH then- he likes his bed LOL.

See I'm swaying towards the RR's at the moment

I saw 2 youngsters the other day at they look even more fab in the flesh

Sounds like you are going to be able to offer a wonderful home to whichever dog you choose.

Looking at your list:-


My first choice, in your situation would be a lab (there is a good reason why they are so popular

). Adorable dogs, very easy to train, loyal and uncomplicated. Also would adapt to any changes in your life quite easily (ie. if work situations change and the dog would need to be left at home).

Next would be a RR (cos I've got one), they are full of energy, good fun dogs. Reputed to not be the easiest to train, I wouldn't say they are particularly difficult - not nearly as easy as a lab though - but can be pretty strong willed. All the bitches I have met have been, shall we say, less exuberant than the boys

No experience with GSD or greyhound, but both are lovely dogs and have known many people who have owned these breeds and they make great pets.

Springers/collies wouldn't be my choice. Both always seem slightly manic to me unless they are worked or exercised LOADS.

Labs sound perfect for us. For some reason your description of the RR reminds me of my OH LOL.

I've wanted a collie since I was about 10 but would only rehome one if I wasnt working (or working at a yard). Knowing me I would end up with a really manic one LOL.

Do they have to be pedigree? If you're thinking of getting 2, and I think you ought to as you have such a lovely set up, why don't you go to your nearest rescue and try some out together. Next year we're thinking about getting a bigger dog, and I quite fancy a Lab, a Greyhound or a Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They seem to me the easiest to train, and I only want a dutiful companion/playmate for my terrier tyke.

Have you thought about a Flat-Coat Retriever? I think they're incredibly stunning, and quite like the fact they're much less common than Labs, yet you pretty much get the same sweet personality.

Flat coated are stunning, never worked with one. But I love labs. Such good dogs and wonderful to work.

No, dont have to be pedigree at all. I have been looking at info on pedigrees purely as its easier to find out about temperment/size etc. But crosses or mongrels will be considered.

Thanks for the link. There are a couple of rescues nearby, not sure about a greyhound one though.

The only thing with going to a rescue centre is that I WILL want to take them ALL home
