I was mocked mercilessly at the yard this evening for quartering Star. Doesn't anyone do this anymore?

"she won't get cold" just take it off and get it out the way" (rug)

"be a lot quicker if you did one side at a time" etc


Do you all work around your clipped horse folding rugs backwards and forwards etc? Is it "old skool!" Does the pony club not teach this any more?

I feel like such a prude!
 
I always quarter went my horse has been clipped - just being conisderate and a good mummy!!

How would they like to stand in the cold completely naked!!

They still teach you this for BHS stage exams and for your stable management cert. But I very rarely see anyone doing it even in the iciest of weathers. I'd like to know how owners would feel if they had to strip off in the garden before showering etc. Having said that, there are some times when I think if the horse is in a snug stable and you are giving a vigorous grooming, horsey-o won't come to any harm and it's good to take a rug off for a while now and then anyway.
 
I don't think your horse will think your a prude as he stays nice and warm

It depends on the weather really and the clip. TBH I just wipe off the rug and groom, but if it was really cold out and she had a full clip then yes, I'd fold rugs back and forward

I'm the only one that does it and also the only one that warms their bit up in the morning before putting the bridle on.
 
I warm the bit up, i get some strange looks but i dont care.

Also if im changing a rug i stick it in the jeep (switched on) with heat going full boot. Gets them toasty to put them on the horse lol.

OH asks if i want to chew their food for them lol.
 
Sounds strange I know but I quarter mine when I bath him. He gets the cooler up his neck and gradually opened back as he's bathed. I wouldn't want to be bathed and left standing in hot or cold weather.

Absolutely. I chose to take all his coat off - it's my responsibility to ensure he stays warm - whatever we're doing!
 
i'm sorry, but how else are you meant to groom a clipped horse when its freezing?! I always quarter our horses, and i think they appreciate it.

how would we like it if someone came to give us a massage and whipped off our nice cosy duvet?!

Cheeky sods. I get mocked for having a full bed and numerous rugs to put on according to the weather. Don't worry about what they say. I pull his front half back, groom, replace it and do the same for the back half. I like to give him a couple of minutes without his rug to let his skin breath if its not too cold.

I remember my mum pulling my quilt off me every weekend to try and get me up and I didn't like it !!!!

Glad I'm not alone! I think these "traditional" techniques are there for a reason. Like some of you have said, it's habit. Just seemed weird that nobody else on my yard had a clue why I was doing it!
 
i do it! dont want him standing there in the cold and then get on him and expect him to be fine with that! he'll be all stiff!

i fold the rug back and just brush where his saddle and girth will be........dont really groom the whole lot unless its the weekend and i have more time for a full groom! plus i do his feet and legs with all his rug on, then his head, then fold the rug back. do whatever you want, besides it better to be more caring than not so! whats there problem?!
 
I always do it but I've rarely see other people doing it now. It seems to be one of those things that people have stopped doing - probably because they're lazy

I don't do it but then for daily grooming, I very quickly brush them over so it literally takes me about 2 mins! I do their body and then put the rug back on again for spending time on their legs / face / mane / tail etc.
