Ouch, I'm in agony, my back is really hurting and I feel sick and horrible.

I went for a ride on my own this morning on Axey and picked a ride where I knew there wasn't going to be any gates (we aren't very good at them) But when I got to the bottom of a bridleway in the forest there was a newly built fence and gate as there are cattle grazing in there now.
3 ladies on horses had just gone through and I was halfway through the gate when it suddenly swung shut on us, poor Axey ran backwards, but his reins had got caught on the handle and he paniced and reared up turning at the same time and I got thrown off.
I was winded and couldn't breathe for a few seconds but then managed to get up. Axey bless him just stood there looking at me and luckily the 3 ladies came back to see if I was ok. They were lovely and one of them got off and gave me a leg up back on. They told me where they were from but I have forgotten now, so if it was someone from here then thank you again.
My reins had snapped and the bottom part of my grackle was broken too, I literally sat on Axey and let him take me home and he looked after me all the way back.
I'm just about to get into a nice warm bath, and have some paracetamols.

was it one of those spring loaded gates??? they are leathal and abby really really doesn't like them we don't hav a hope in hell of gettin through them before they shut on us

It was a hunting gate with the big handle that sticks up, and yes it was spring loaded

I'm really annoyed as he used to be really good with gates but in the last few weeks he has been getting worse about opening them and runs through really quickly. This hasn't helped at all

There was another gate the same at the other end of the bridleway, but I got off him to do that one!

ouch...that sounds painful...that will put him off gaqtes even more.....hope you get better quickly!!!

(any excuse to visit ebay!!)

ouch, poor you, good that Axey didn't run off though. George and I have never been able to get the hang of gates, and those spring loaded ones are bad news.

Have you met the cows yet?
They are very sweet but rather inquisative. I guess you haven't been that way in a while though as fence went up 2 years ago although gates were only closed a few weeks ago when the 6 cattle were released.
Those gates are not the easiest and I can symapthise with you. My boy gets smacked on the heels by them every time as they snap shut. They are too narrow to turn and hold the gate through but snap too quickly to allow them just to shut themselves. I guess we'll get the hang of them eventually.

Hope you aren't too sore and that Axey wasn't too offended by the whole event.

I was at Charleston Bottom in Friston forest, do you know it then? I'm sure it wasn't there last time I hacked there!

Axey isn't scared of cows at all, but I think today if we had met them it would have been the last straw.
I did have a bit of a trot and canter up there, but was feeling a bit feeble! He looked after me tho and didn't try and p**s off like he normally does.

Oh Seahorse, I do hope you are not tooooo stiff in the morning

.... after your reply to my post on Riding and Leading, it is quite apparent that you to not have much luck at gates

I was very nearly involved in a horrible accident involving one of these VERY spring loaded gates.I was riding a 16.1hh con X Id who was wimp at the best of times, anyway,we had ridden through this gate lots of times and up a hill but the person who had recently bought the land wasn't at all horse friendly and decided to try and put us off using his fields (bridleway) by installing THE worst gate possible for riders, so one day i get to the gate (which is very near to home and the only other way of getting home is to go back the way you came which is a good 2-3 miles) and realise the gate was truly impossible to get this large wide horse through safely with me on! to make matters worse their were loads of cows put in this field and the horse had a huge problem with cows in general and literally fell to pieces when he ever spotted them! Anyway i tried riding him through it but he was petrified of the cows the other side,he was never usually difficult but was a baby at the time so didn't want to scare him so i got off as he very good to handle from the ground,i managed to get him through it with me going first and then throwing it open whilst he dashed through, then the major problem came.........the cows about a herd of 20 at least GALLOPED over with all the fuss we both were making over the gate and promptly surrounded us cornered in this field,i then had a horse cantering full pelt around me on a circle, not fun at all i can tell you,he was so scared and i was too, can't really remember what happened after that but i think i shooed them away enough for me to somehow get on,we then galloped all the way to the side of the field through a very easy gate,i was so glad i could trust him at full gallop as many horses would just bolted but he was a star!! i made an offer on him when he was up for sale but i didn't get him in the end and i still havn't got over that to this day,a one in a million horse, stunning!!!

Those gates are a pain in the a**e.

We have them over our common.... and cows!!! I can do the ones that you open towards you... merlin actually knows now exactly how to stand, when to rein back etc and not to hang around going through them.....

BUT the ones you have to push away from you are awful.... as soon as there is a gap big enough for a snake to get through, he charges full pelt and scrapes my legs off on the posts..... then gets scared cos he has hurt me (i think)!! and tries to run away.

To make matters even worse, most of them have a bloody great cattle grid next to them , so you are risking having a leg down that as well.

I just get off now

Yep that's the place. Cows are very funny but do like to come out of the bushes at you so be warned, they are very confident having been raised in the New Forest.

Hope you are not feeling to stiff today.
