ouch, im not sure with regards to the complications but sounds quite a lot!

Mine was a knock out and cost me £180 for a normal "chopping"

Christ!! How old is he? My colt Bertie still only has 1 ball and he's 10 months old, do you think his 2nd 1 will drop? if it dont then his name will be 'Hitler'! I'll be buggered if im paying out over a grand!!!

My friend had Sec D done by vet and she lived in Suffolk, will find out much hers cost. She is now in Auzzyland so will phone her later, he was done before she took him to Auzzyland

What about Cambridge University Vet School - aren't they supposed to be cheaper because it is a teaching place? I know several that have been done there & all were fine.

Hi,

I have just read aloud your post re cost for gelding a monorchid ( one testicle) to my husband whom is a Vet and his reply was - ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!! he currently charges £300 - £500 max for this op & £180 for a straightforward Cut. We colt-cut some of the un-handled dartmoor ponies for charity each year (around 14 in one afternoon) of which 1 or 2 are also monorchids! this is done in a temperarily made paddock on sterile sheets and dropped to the floor then left to recover with several of our staff and the Dartmoor Pony trust staff watching over them, do you think if it really warranted £1k+ we would do this every year for charity!!! There must be a lot of profit in your quotation!

For colic surgery on my large Shire x TB youngster, involving lots of vets, lots of drugs (cos she's so large), and a 10 day stay in hospital, they charged me £3400 if that helps you any?

I had a true monorchid gelded (they had to go in via the abdomen to search for the missing "bud") and that cost in total £300 17 years ago so with inflation etc! (they never found the bud so he was always riggy). All I can say is shop around. Good luck. xx

That is taking the pi55!
My Welshies cost me £120 each to geld, and they were both rigs.
Has your vet tried injecting with anaestetic to see if it will drop enough for a standing, or can you not feel it at all?

See that sounds reasonable. He would be in 2 days max, is tiny, so doubt they would need much drugs, still cant get over the price!

I don't think it sounds particularly high. He only has the one testicle dropped, so presumably the other one is hiding in his abdomen somewhere. So, instead of doing a standing castration under sedation and local anaesthetic, which would cost around £200 probably, they are going to have to knock him out, open up his abdomen and search for the offending testicle. Which is a procedure more like colic surgery, hence why it costs more like colic surgery!

My friends 17 hand colt was gelded as a three year old, he only had one testicle so it was a general anaesthetis and a 'difficult job'. I think the total bill came to £800, with several post op visits etc, this was a couple of years ago.

Feel free to shop around, it's a a free market.

Rossdales offer an excellent service with first rate facilities but to offer a first rate service, they charge the first rate price
