I cannot put it off any longer... this weekend is sheath/willy cleaning time!!

It is more than needed, as it is very crusty, and on closer inspection last night, his sheath could be a little swollen (he didn't mind me touching, and there didn't appear to be any heat) and I was able to pick off the big bits.

So I was going to go for the baby oil trick. He tends to relax when I groom him, so was going to wait for that, and then with a pair of gloves, warm water and baby oil, do the best I can. Is it OK to leave the baby oil on his bits, and also, was thinking about putting some aloe vera gel on too... do you think that would OK?
 
I've just purchased a colt. He'll be the first male horse I've had in 28 years. So thanks for that! I'd happily forgotten the joys of sheath cleaning. :D
 
I used to ambush it while it was out and coat it with liberal amounts of baby oil. I found that would allow most of the crusty bits to fall off by the next day, a gentle wipe would remove most of the rest, and the bean would be soft enough to be removed without making him uncomfortable.
 
I'd use KY jelly at least then you know it's safe to be taken up internally where as Baby Oil is probably not recommended for internal use?
 
I'm a bit of an expert on this (ewww) :o as my boy has melanomas inside his sheath which cause an over-production of smegma so his needs washing regularly. The vet told me warm water and liquid paraffin only. Baby oil, although mostly liquid paraffin is scented so can cause problems (a bit like scented soap causung thrush in ladies). You can get liquid paraffin from the chemist and dilute it about 1 part in 10 parts water.

I find the squeegy type cloths the best - those brightly coloured, fairly thick squares people use in kitchens. They're absorbent enough so you can squeeze a lot of water out of them over the offending areas and soft enough not to be abrasive. Failing that a very wet flannel works quite well too.

My boy hates it so I wear my hat. This is preferable to my old boy who clearly enjoyed it too much (so gross) and started rocking back and fore:eek:.
 
If it makes you feel better I have to get Frank's out at the weekend to take photos for the vet (again!) he loves me really! I'm a hands and water sort of girl with some sheath cleanser if there is any really hard bits :p. The above is why you really should get familiar with it though ;) - Frank has/had a suspected squamous cell carcinoma which has been treated and was spotted at a v. early stage.

I would not be able to control the giggles...so glad mine's a girl!

It was so gross - luckily he was quite clean so once a year was enough.

This next bit is going to sound even worse:
Ester - I have about 50 photos of A's bits on my phone. Had to send them to Derek Knottenbelt as he was being considered for trials for treatment for melanomas. Unfortunately they're too big and would require surgery first - something my vet doesn't think is wise, especially for a trial which may not work. I've kept them so we can compare annually to keep track of growth.

I'm so glad this is a horsey forum, I don't think 'normal' people would understand :o:o:o
 
My good as gold pony doesn`t mind me doing it, stands good as gold and gets it out ... My bigger lad is a complete nightmare though and would kick the living daylights out of you. As he has to be sedated for his teeth doing (nightmare for that too) i always do a clean up of willy and ears when he`s knocked out LOL !!! I usually just use warm water and a bit of sheath cleaner.
 
I'm a baby oil girl ! A squirt or two when it's out, and voila, it gets clean. He'd never leave it hanging around long enough for me to clean it 'properly'.
 
glad I'm not alone annagain :D, yup Frank's pics have been going Prof Knottenbelt via my vet and am hopefully that treatment number 3 seems to have been successful :) - lopping it off wasn't an option apparently ;)

My loan horse is coming back from loan tomorrow and this is now going to be a weekly job for me too due to melanomas.

I wasn't able to see the vet when he came last so his loaner has a load of photos on her phone and she also has a diagram the vet drew! It took some explaining when her brother was looking at the photos on her phone and came across them!
 
I try to get it done asap, squirt hose pipe baby oil up my hand and have a good pick then a quick wipe another hose squirt and an cup of tea to settle my stomach. UUUrrrggghhh.

Mine have their own folder!
 
I have a 26yr and if he's in a perv mood then he'll get it out and nibble you as you do it :/ But other times he's plain nope your not touching it.. I always use a sponge and a bucket while it's hanging.. dont touch it but kinda scrub it as it dangles around LOL may try the baby oil.. sounds better ;P Luckily have a mare also so dont have to do much with her :D
 
I have never had to do this with my boy, his is always squeaky clean!

Which is a good thing as it makes me wanna vom alittle
 
I always used ky jelly. He didn't mind it done, stood like a soldier. But would hide his member as far up as he could so I had to 'go in'.
Started twice yearly but as he got older became quite a dirty old man! Once a month or as needed at the end. I found a bean at several month intervals.
 
I never clean sheaths.
As a teen i cleaned my Welsh D's sheath very gently, a few days later it bled then it grew growths one of which got to the size of a kids football and ultimately led to him being PTS. The guilt i still feel is immense

Im not adverse to squirting some oil on a dangling willy (!) but would never ever get right in and clean one ever again - i just dont think mucking around with them can be a good thing

I dont think the cleaning caused the growths but i do believe it aggravated sonething that had stayed dormant till that day
