This is big. This is huge. I cantered Billy IN PUBLIC.

We went to a local show yesterday, to do our first ever dressage test on grass. We only did Intro, and then went back to the warm-up area to try a canter afterwards.

About 18 months go he was sold with the words 'he doesn't DO schooling'. Last year was the last time we did a show outdoors, and he was in a Dutch gag and a martingale, and I struggled to hold him. Yesterday, in his snaffle, he won the senior intro class (ok, so there were only 3 in it, but I got a little trophy and £10 which is the biggest, most impressive thing I've ever won.) I spent the whole night before imagining him bogging off across the show field at 100mph, and I was so nervous I couldn't eat breakfast, and we ended up with 71.5%! The canter afterwards was pretty nice on the right, and I got the left one on attempt number 5 (proving to all and sundry why we didn't enter the prelim!), and I have a blurry picture to prove it:

Somewhat pointless point, but I'm just so thrilled with him. To top it off, this evening we cantered first time on both reins. We might actually be getting somewhere.

What a happy post congratulations it really is the little things in life- I'm sure you'll be posting more successes we shall wait in anticipation!

Fantastic achievement, well done ..... you wouldnt catch me cantering in public .... the horror would be too much for the general public!
My daughter is working hard on canter with her ex-trotter, so I know what a big deal it is.

Congratulations. You must be thrilled to bits.

Just goes to prove that with the right rider any horse can "do" schooling.

Well done really pleased for you!
To most they wouldn't bat an eyelid at the thought of cantering but from someone who in the past was filled with dread at the thought of going into canter even in the school, I know what this must mean to you! :-) Onwards and upwards!

This with bells on!! I totally lose my bottle these days when asked to canter as the pony bunny hops first... its not pleasant

Thank you all :D

And especially thank you to those who replied with advice to my earlier thread about struggling to canter with stirrups on, I have been practising like mad!

Fantastic! So happy for you, this is what it's all about isn't it, sticking it out to achieve the "impossible" and when it pays off the feeling is immense. You look amazing together, it can only get better x
