I followed advice and decided to put her in boot camp. Got to the yard last night and she had taken down all the electric fencing- again. So I caught her and marched her into her stable and when she went for me I squared up to her. She looked surprised and took a step back!

anyway, we had a bit of argy bargy where she kicked me and i kicked her back. When she turned her back on me I turned my back on her and stamped my feet, she kicked me, I kicked her

I did it horse fashion

Result: she stood still and let me groom her and remove the sticky willies from her mane and tail (this is normally a 3 man job!), she backed up when i told her to when i put her feed in and she wasn't allowed her ball last night.

a small success, or so I thought.

I spent 20mins out in the rain this morning putting the fencing back up. She walked out demurly by my side, took her carrot gently, waited for me to get back to the stables and destroyed the fencing. She very carefully, using her teeth pulled up each post not touching the electric tape and just dropped it on the ground. She did not take her eyes off me the entire time she was doing it.

Well...at least you beat her in the stable

My rising 3yo does that trick with the fencing...graps the little square bit at the top (carefully), pulls the post out of the ground, lays it flat...and can tiptoe delicately through the tapes when flat...
If you find a solution to that one, let me know!

i'm not so sure i have beaten her in the stable after this morning though. I was really chuffed last night for getting a little bit of obedience out of her. but she just paid me back this morning.

worth noting possibly that she does whatever my OH asks of her with out batting an eyelid. Her problem is definitely with me.

Oh, dear, I'm sorry, but I just had to laugh, tho' you must find it sooo frustrating. You had the right idea about standing up for yourself like a horse, which sounds as tho' it worked. So the next job is the electric fence. Is it possible to pass the tape over the top of the posts, somehow and connect it to the mains? Just one or two sharp jolts should do the trick.

Problem is - why does she do it? I haven't been following your previous post (sorry) - is there more grass the other side, hay stack etc? Or is she just completely bored? It must be very miserable trying to do things in all the mud and rain, but perhaps when the weather is better you could find a way to amuse her before you put her out. Do you have to shoot off straightaway?

Sorry I can't be of more help - but I really do sympathise.

Persistance is key! You have to be more evil and troll-like than she is. Presumably she is keen to come into her stable of an evening, to feed her fat Sheltie belly? If so, I'd go to the field, catch her in your headcollar....then make her follow you around as you repair the troll's fencing damage...thus waiting for her tea...with the annoyance factor of trailing after owner-scum like you!
Perhaps a bit of lunging would be required to remove the excess fence posting energy?

We had a horse that pulled the posts out too by the tops, we use the rope and I looped the rope around the very top of the post where he gets his teeth round and made sure the battery for the fencer was well charged. ZAP, funny, he doesnt do it anymore! Nasty Mummy!

she has two and a half acres that she shares with just Jack, there is plenty of grass even now. I really do think it is just mischeviousness. I have left the fencing down today, fenced the area that goes to the gate and road and left their stable doors open so they can go in if they want incase it is a shelter issue with her although they have lots of trees that they can get under if they want to.

mmm.......dont know if you have access to mains or not but our houdini pony who specialised in taking down the fencing has had his wings well and truly clipped since the electric went in. He also used to run under the fence but not any more, he had a couple of big belts and now has a lot of respect for it. Even with tape you can wrap it around the top of the post as hollyf said, this should help to discourage her!

Bless, I still think she is misunderstood, your oh obviously knows how to treat her properly in the way she feels she deserves!!

he sits on the floor of her stable every night and they do a mutual grooming thing for half an hour. when he picks her feet out, he says "can i have this one please sweety?"and points at a leg and she picks it up.only rarely will she go for him, like yesterday morning and then she willcome creeping back to him after a while trying to groom him.

Hmmmm, I wonder why the pony doe have an issue with you and not your OH? You sound pretty wound up with her, which she would pick up on and possibly react accordingly.

I'd be tempted to do some meaningful groundwork with her to get her to respect you and your space. Kelly Marks's book Perfect Manners is a great place to start.

Be VERY careful about kicking the mare in the stable, you might have got away with it so far, but if she means it that is one battle you are never going to win. And you could pay a big price...

Jokernut - thank fully we are on our own.

ISH -Mad- I'mnot really that wound up with her.I can see the funny side of this morning. I think exasperated probably covers it best. It ahs only been recently I have had a problem with her. She has always been head strong but generally a sweet little pony -she's only 33.5 inches but at the moment it is ALL attitude

PiebaldEaster -she wears one in the summer,I hate putting on her when it's raining and the vet says her weight is perfect so she doesn't need it at the moment. And won't toture her with it for the sake of the fencing.

Pinkweasel - glad to be of service

coult you wrap fencing down the posts and back up, as long as they don't touch the ground and elec is strong enough surely that should at least give her a tingle?

Have you tried it the opposite way around, you think & act exactly like your husband and see if she responds to that? Forgive me I haven't read the whole story but from this post sounds a little like chicken and egg situation where because you now expect it she behaves that way anyway?

...although if i was going to sit down in her stable to see if she'd have a mutual groom and not a kick I might want to wear my body protector and hat just in case!

yes i have considered that Shilasdair.

Naturally - during the summer I did just that. and she treated me just like OH. As I said further up, it just seems to be recently her attitude towards me has changed enormously but slowly. I wondered if it was a 'mare thing', I'm not experieced with mares; or possibly hormones. Many people yesterday suggested I go for dominance as she is/appears to be herd leader so that's what I'm trying at the moment.

LOL ur pony has a wicked sense of humour

Have u tried putting a big dollop of mustard on each fence post? My mare also used to like rearranging her fence - I was told to use crib box (?) but she wasn't bothered by that so I tried englsh mustard
