Sorry, bit of a pointless post, as I'm alright and my horse is alright, but this morning out on my hack, we found ourselves caught up in one of those moments when a bizarre sequence of events all seem to happen together, causing a potentially deadly ending (though luckily this time we're fine).

I was almost at the end of my morning hack, and walking along the road towards my stables. It is a residential area, and the speed limit is 30mph, but just past the turning into our stables is where the houses end, and the road continues onto the next village.

One of the houses along the road had decorators in, and as I approached, one of the decorators who spoke no word of English at all, and I doubt had even seen a horse before, pulled out a giant plastic sheet and started shaking it out in the road. Most of my other horses would have displayed some highly colourful behaviour at that, but my Gelderlander is very trusting and we have a super bond, and I was able to reassure him, and he just went into giraffe mode and carefully walked past - at this precise moment a black freelander came belting round the corner, and towards us at breakneck speed.

I put my hand up, to try and politely signal for the car to slow down, as I was having a problem - my horse was currently in a delicate state, trying to negotiate the ignoramus tarpaulin man, who was ignoring my request to stop doing it and stand still for 5 seconds. Cars were parked along the pavement all the way along that road, apart from the section where the idiot continued to shake his sheet! So I was unable to tuck myself safely into the side of the road, but the car did not slow down, and it wooshed past us, with a couple of inches to spare at a speed far greater than the 30mph speed limit.

The driver was a woman in her late 40s!! Unfortunately I didn’t get the car registration, and when I then tried to educate the tarpaulin man about how not to behave in front of a horse on a road, he clearly had no idea what I was talking about!

Arghhh.... At least me and my precious boy are OK, but it frightens and angers me to think how easily things could have turned bad, purely due to the actions of ignorant, selfish morons, who don't seem to give a damn about other people :(
(By the way, I was wearing my luna rider hi-viz coat and my yellow hi-viz sealskins gloves)

Thank god your both ok! I know yr pain all to often ignorant people assume horses are humans and cause accidents. I had a near miss due to an arse hat of a women having no control of the 5 dogs she was walking chasing us up the road ! Thankfully my boy was brave and trusted his mum.

We had no end of kind, friendly, helpful people today, each one of them got thank yous and we appreciate them so much. But it takes one idiot to ruin it all.
We'd had an amazing hack, both horses were great and less than 100 meters from the yard, a bike comes speeding past (looked like he was practicing for the Isle of Mann TT!) and terrifies the lead horse, who span and made Ned spin. Thankfully they didn't run.
They're fine with motorbikes usually, but the speed of this was incredible :O it's a 40mph road!!
Not just for our safety, but for the safety of the biker and others...he'll be lucky if he doesn't cause an accident sooner or later.

Women in 4 wheels drives urgh!!! Most of them cant drive them. Glad you are both ok and I know what a fright this can give you.

There are some silly people on the roads aren't there? Pedestrians and motorists. You were unlucky today or should i say lucky that your boy is so good? I on the other hand had a fantastic hack this morning with lots of polite and considerate people/drivers. Full marks to motorists and dog walkers in Radwell/Felmersham, young and old, male and female, even the lady 4 x 4 driver without a tow bar! LOL! Happy and safe hacking to all!
