quick walk, trot and canter wouldnt have done it if she showed any sign of pain or struggling but its been 4 months now since Dolly and it was only quick. So well behaved, enjoyed her canter down the paddock with Dolly flat out galloping beside of us ... brakes failed a bit (usually i say woah and she comes to a trot) bit more of a half hault but she was having fun :D

Such a safe and good natured mumma bear :)

Im glad :) I know people said not to ride her until Dolly is gone but she does enjoy a quick pootle round, she defiantly did especially her canter really went for it bless her
 
You and she look so perfect together.

I really don't think you are doing her any harm, in some countries it is considered the norm to ride a mare with foal at foot so I doubt your 5 minute pootle will be a long lasting trauma for her!

Thank you, a kind friend let me ride her TB mare but it's totally different getting back on your own horse, felt like i was at 'home' again :)

Well that's it fair enough if we are doing an hours schooling but we both had fun :) x
 
Not a bit of bother in it. She is happy and comfortable. Go for it! You could even take her out with Dolly on a hack! Ride and lead? Or ride and person in front and behind containing the crazy! :biggrin3:

That's how i looked at it, by the way she flung herself down the field , ears pricked forwards racing her daughter i wouldnt say she was in the least bit bothered :P I'd love to but from the insurance POV leading out in a headcollar a young filly is a big no no. All we have round here is on road hacking sadly otherwise she would be out for walks with us :)
 
Ah I see. Dolly is over 4 months now? I'd say she could manage 15 mins away from mum, whilst you go for a sneaky hack...I'm sure Tessy would appreciate the break! And making Dolly more independent would help the weaning process. She is doing well off Tess, half an hour of solo adventures when Tess is having a break would not do any harm! :wink3:!
 
I dont see you doing anything wrong at all I am sure tessy enjoyed herself I have always ridden mares with foals at foot for short breaks from baby as long as both are happy with the arrangement there is no harm. I will add aI did wait until the foal was about 4 months oldand usually held the foal while someone else rode the mare. however my filly quite happily would stand with me in the school and if loose would jump the jumps on her own in the arena when the mare was finished a quiet ride
And not that I would do so but many foals are weaned for selling at 4 months so she could be back in full work in some places
 
Tess is looking good, and you look so right on her as well no wonder you felt at home.

Will you start giving them time apart before Dolly goes to her new home, hope the separating goes well.

We used to go short hacks on our mare and leave foal at home with someone looking after foal. Started with 5 mins and worked up from there.

Expect everyone has different ways of weaning, so good luck with next stage.

I know exactly what you mean, it doesn't matter what horse I ride, how nice it is, breed, size, schooling or not, nothing is the same as sitting on my own :) I don't think you're doing anything wrong having a quick pootle now and then, and you know that she'll be fine to come straight back into work once Dolly is weaned :)
 
That's not being naughty at all, I rode my mare when the filly was about three months old and my OH walked the filly along side us out on short walks on the road. Got the baby used to traffic and mare fitter to start 'proper' riding once little one was weaned. She looks a happy horse to me.
 
As my ponies were living out through the winter and the mare was looking well I didn't actually wean the foal fully until the spring so she had the benefit of milk during the bad weather. However once she was about 4 months old she was totally happy to be left in the field with her friends while I schooled her mother in the other field and when she got used to that, took her mother out for short hacks. When I did finally wean her it was totally stress free.
