I do wonder why people do this

dont appologise for the rant. its a familiar one!!

i dont get it

it just does not make any sense to me

Nope never has to us either.
I also particularly like the clients that will try each new farrier to the area but then when they get disappointed and want to come back take offence when we can't fit them in because in the 6 months they've been using a less reliable/inexperienced farrier we've taken on new clients and now can't fit them in.

Must be the ultimate source of frustration! I am incredibly happy with my farrier, he insists I book in advance so we both know where we are. Given he puts up with my youngsters naughty antics i'm of the opinion that the guy deserves a medal lol

I think, and dare i say it... there are more unreliable clients than farriers and its possible the unreliable clients have made the farriers that way? i can honestly see this bieng possible as one can only take being blamed for everything and being treated badly for so long.

I do have some great clients i must add

hush you'll get shot saying things like that

We've got some clients that are fab, some that are fine, and some we'd quite happily not do... but we're not allowed to say that.

I think it's the universal truth... unfortunately

My current farrier was delighted when my hubby married me. My husband used this farrier for over twenty years before I came along. Hubby was one of those annoying people who only rang when the horse needed doing. Since we got married, I have always booked the next appointment once the farrier has finished his work and before he leaves. Farrier commented on how happy this makes him
grin.gif

In return, our farrier has only once changed our appointment, and that was with two weeks notice, and because he had smahed his ankle.

my farrier doesnt do booking in, i asked him and he said to call him the week before i want him out and he will fit me in

I always book my next appointment - 6 weeks ahead. I phione first thing in the morning to check what time to expect him so the first horse or pony is in and ready for him when he arrives.

I am lucky and have no particular problems with hooves/shoes but on the odd occaision I have - abcess lost shoe etc - he has been out within 24 hours. Never have a problem with holidays as it is a father/son combo so there is always one around!!

Mine are booked in at 6 weekly intervals and I always have 2 bookings in my farriers diary at any point in time. I have used the same farrier for 7 years and have never had to cancel or re-arrange an appointment.

Booking in make it so much easier for all concerned and I fail to understand why some farriers will not do it this way.

Because alot of them think they can get away with keeping the shoes until they are literally falling off as they don't want/can't afford to have them done on a 6week rota....madness!! I always book my next appointment before my farrier leaves the yard, he texts me the night before, works well all round!

I always book my farrier for the next time WHEN he's out. Then I know when he's coming and he knows when he's coming. If either of us needs to rearrange we let the other know with plenty of time. He's often in the area as well so if Genie loses a shoe (TOUCH WOOD she hasn't with him yet) he's usually able to come out and whack one on pretty quickly.

Some people are just ignorant, desperate to cut corners, and selfish, apparently thinking that they are the only people on their farrier's books!

Another one here who always books next appointment before farrier leaves yard, 6 wks in summer, 7 in the winter. Lovely chap, very reliable, even though booked he always sends a text the evening before to confirm (I think he started doing this due to unreliable customers

). Really drives me up the wall when I hear other owners moaning they can't get hold of their farrier, and their horse is hobbling about with shoes missing due to so long since last visit.

I'm moving yards next week and am about to phone him to see if he will still come out to me, as have horrible feeling he's going to say it's a bit too far for him. Wish me luck!

with previous farrier we used to book for the 12 weeks in advance as we have 6 weeklies and if we only booked for 6 weeks all the 7 and 8 weeklies would have got in before us so we would always have 2 appointments booked at any one time!

not necessary now, we just do the 6 weeks.

I dont tell my farrier when i want to book........
he just writes in the yard diary when he's coming to the horses as and when they will require there shoes doing next according to their needs,
we leave him our cheques,
my horse gets perfect shoes that never get come off,
I never need to be there.
I am always a happy client & i never [as long as i dont foget my money] P him off!

Simples!

I think some people are just disorganised.

No time to read all replies, but I completely agree with you. I have always booked the next shoeing or trim on the day of the previous trim. I know where I stand, farrier knows and if he's ill in the days before my appointment or struggling for whatever reason, he can ring me up and reschedule.

I was briefly on a yard where an owner had all four shoes come off her horse before the farrier came. I found one front shoe and assumed he'd lost ONE, but it was only when I told her that she said, 'Oh, the back ones are in the field somewhere.' I was fekin furious!!! Lazy cow hadn't even walked the field to look for them. Didn't realise it was common place. No wonder you get frustrated!!
