Okay. So. *Takes deep breath*

I am successful in what I do, work wise. I have a company and we do okay. We're looking at some other areas so as I don't have to be away so much.

I don't particularly 'love' my job, though I have worked in some fascinating and amazing places and met some brilliant people. The more it goes on, the less I like it though :(

Here's the 'am I completely mad' bit...

I would like to do something else.

I am good at teaching, at getting people to understand things, so have contemplated teaching riding, for the lower levels (I have changed instructors over the past as I have got 'better' lol).

I am interested in saddles and fittings.

I like the idea of Bowen treatment.

Hm.

I need to keep doing what I am doing for a while, until the other things we are doing take off(!), and I'm fine with that.

Oh ignore me. I probably just need shooting :D

Forgot to say: I get paid a lot for what I do at the moment, but I've been working some figures and it is possible, so long as we sell here and don't go mad buying somewhere else :D

Go make yourself a hot choccy and have a godo long think about what it is you actually want to do. Have a fertle on google and see what qualifications etc you need add up the costs against potential earnings and see where you end up!

P.S. good luck!

I'm a big fan of change myself. I went back to school at the age of 48 to get my degree as a paralegal and graduated this past spring.

So my advice is to seriously look into it! I really don't know how one goes about becoming an instructor (it's something I've toyed with too actually) but why the heck not? Judging from the posts of yours I've read, I bet you'd be good at it - you explain yourself well, stay reasonably calm in the heat of thread wars and you're compassionate.

You may have to quit the drug habit though. :p

Follow your dreams is what I say, if you have the time and the money to get on to the ladder and get qualified then go for it, it will take time but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, others may say the money is not great but unless you give it a go, you'll never know. :)

go for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life is far too short for "what ifs"

You could train while you work and maybe start part time , cut down your hours at your present job to begin with -
Good luck x :)

I think because you are ill at the moment you are contemplating life and what its all about. I did this when I was 40. Had worked for the same Bank since leaving school and I left to do something else, it was a good chance. It didnt work out and I went back to the Bank. I saw it for what it was - all sales and targets and not what it was when I joined. I now have my own business doing Rugwashing and work part time to supplement this at a Haulage company doing 15hrs per week. I wouldnt go back now as am so much happier. I have time for my horses like today, rode out for 1 1/2 hrs on my wonderful mare who is doing so well after her DDFT injury. I think you come to a crossroads in life and realise that its maybe time for a change.

So I wont shoot you lol. Have you thought about teaching riding and offering hot choccies and doughnuts for afterwards? That could be good and win you lots of clients.

Hope your feeling well anyway and that your back is on the mend.

Sorry but I don't think you are remotely capable enough to consider teaching anyone else how to ride at the moment

bowen therapist etc. you could train for yes, would take a few years to be successful as you would need to build a client base, and you would need to establish if there was a need I would say in the area you want to move to because if there aren't enough clients close enough you'll spend all your time all over the place.
Saddles and fittings obviously you would need to train in, so again need to factor those costs in and what the expected return is. It is probably worth speaking to people in each of those areas to find out the training time and how long before they were a viable business.
If you don't like what you're doing, and can afford to then I see no reason not to explore additional career options.

I have seen the pictures on here, can't remeber if vid but pictures and general questions etc. give me enough to make my judgement on. Sorry but you did ask.

If your keen enough to do then go for it. Life is definitely too short. What sort of age are you Mrs M? Dont have to be precise, just wondered if its like I was and whether its an age thing that sparks off the desire to change things in our life.

i think it's a good opportunity while you're laid up to be looking at what else is out there. start making a list, google ideas and follow links until you get all the information you can handle. Then sit down with the ideas and work out the numbers.

if the numbers for one or more ideas make sense then decide which you think you'd rather do and go for it!

I'd love to become a saddler (maker and fitter actually) but can't yet justify the time and cost of training. I also looked into mcTimoney and Bowen but couldn't get the information really, but that could easily have changed.

I keep thinking about doing this and there are a lot of pros and cons about doing it. I am a bugger though and keep thinking about the loss of money and how I would rather beable to afford my hobby properly, than struggle to pay for it

On that note, better go back to packing for Spa... you have to love bubble wrap :D

No videos of me on here. I didn't ask if anyone thought I could do it, I said I was contemplating it. If you can remember every question I have asked on here, then you have an enviable memory. For completeness, I used to teach to a reasonable level. I might no longer have the fitness of my youth, but I can explain the basics and I am really rather good at it. I am very good at instilling confidence. I have already said it would be a the lower level, certainly until/if I decided to move up. I think it is an area that is often rushed and I believe that getting the basics right are fundamental. I fully appreciate that I would need more training, which is noted and costed where I know the figures. This was a contemplate thread, not a 'No you can't' thread - I appreciate peoples views and comments, but there are ways and ways of wording to ensure that no umbrage is taken where it is not needed.

Life is too short not to make the most of it! Do what will make you happy in the end. Thats why I started up my own business with a company earlier this year, it allows me to pay for the lifestyle I want and use my time as I wish :) usually waking up 8ish and spending all morning with my dogs and horse then doing a few hours work in the afternoon. As long as you can still support your family and horses why not?!

Ta Paddydou. Hm. Will contemplate...*sends child off to make the hot choccy*

Ta hun :). I like teaching. I love it when someone 'gets something' and I feel their pain whilst they're trying to get there. As I said, it would be the basic level. I used to teach, but it was many moons ago; done some lecturing and mentoring, so have kept a hand in to an extent.

As to the drugs... aw, spoil sport lol

Thankies :D. Yes, it will take time (and money lol), but it would make it all that much better I suppose :D. Will contemplate :D.

MrsM - is deffo a mid life crisis kind of thing!!;):D:D:D

I have just done a similar excercise myself :D- have decided what i am going to do and have set in place things needed to start moving in the right direction. Have had enough of the corporate bull***** - and while there are things I am sure i will miss about it there is plenty I won't!!:D

What I think is important is to find the right thing so do your research (I am sure you will:))- I needed something that would occupy my brain as well providing an income. Have settled on a couple of options so will hopefully get the mix right - if not its up to me to change things and make things happen to make it right.:)

Good luck with whatever you decide:).

Forty-seven hun :D. I have contemplated before, but having worked full time with horses before (polo ponies, showjumpers, ranch ponies, equestrian centres, race horses), I am wary of turning my 'hobby' into my job. It was different then, I was broke lol. I could keep on some of the work I do now, so I wouldn't be broke :D.

Oh thinkings :D

I think you would make a good teacher Mrs M. i may be wrong but you come across as patient and understanding and definately very caring about horses. You communicate well and also want to learn. That would make you a very good teacher- the pony club in particular need a few more instructors like you.

Id say go for what you love enjoy and wake up in the morning thinking yeah im going to work! I get up and think god ive got to go back to that place!

Just as long as you can afford it go for it and keep us posted!

Lizx

Thank you :D. I know there's a lot of research to be done, especially as I want to look at different angles. A lot of brushing up to do!

I started doing the saddlery course at Walsall :D. Only, I got a bit too keen and started practising so many hours a day that I ended up damaging my wrists! Repetitive strain injury. Pah. Had to give up :(. Still have all the gear though.... :D

Um. Is it Clipcloppop here who has started Bowen training? Maybe pm and ask her?

I think the moral support/stable management teaching idea is particularly nice :) I am getting my first horse soon and I would love to have someone other than the YO/other liveries to ask for help that wouldn't be judgmental and who genuinely was pleased to offer help, or even just a bit of reassurance. I did lots of stable management stuff at my RS a few years ago, but I don't think 'Own a Pony Weeks', little courses and such are really any help - an awful lot of knowledge but not enough of the practical stuff or indeed common sense. With non-horsey parents I think it is really hard, as how do you 'break in' to horse-owning without any help if you've never done it before? Go for it! :)

well there's absolutely no reason why you can't stay doing what your doing, but train on the side. most instructors i know of went to a college for a couple of hours a week, then went over the lessons at home.

realistically, if i were you i would stay working as i was, but get my exams, and reassess then.

if you still want to teach, damn well go for it :-) it's very very rewarding and what i want to do myself :-)

A friend of mine did a similar thing in her 40:s, she decided to be a Bowen Therapist. if i remember rightly you have to do people before horses!!!

She did little part time jobs to keep herself ticking over money wise. She loves it.

Go for something you passionate about, the learning will come natural.

Good luck to you.

I think there could be a market for low level teaching, like children that are just getting started and adults that are coming into riding at a later stage, like OHs for example. Is this the kind of thing you mean? Some riding schools tend to rush through everything just getting everyone to do rising trot and it takes you months to progress if you're in a group lesson. Having someone who could do one to one tuition and really encourage their students would be great.

Oh yes. Pros and cons....! The money side. Hm. We are used to what we earn lol. Will only be able to do it when the other things are off the ground :D

Ooh, pm me details :D And yes re. the corporate stuff - though part of our contingency is still corporate, unless we can sell out to one of the big boys lol :D.

It's all going into The Game Plan :D
