I just don't know what to say when I see pics like this.

I don't know this person and don't blame the child but was following a link from someones PG post and spotted it in the thumbnail.- small black in hand shetland IMO needing to loose about half its bodyweight

well I was trying to ignore the rosette, or hoping they were the only ones in the class, I do think you have a responsiblity as a judge to educate. I kind of hope said child maybe does pony club.

There are pics of her riding and being led by an older girl too.

We had a similar pony in a ring I was stewarding last year, and judge wasn't sure what to do in the end she was unplaced (pony could hardly trot) and I think the second time the girl came into the ring she asked if she rode it or restricted the grazing - no, no.

It was so bad that afterwards I felt I should have either seeked out the girls parents or taken their address off the entry form and perhaps made some effort to report.
 
Now, I agree that is one fat pony, poor thing!!

On the other hand, far be for me to judge, but, maybe the pony is just being brought back into work, and they are trying desperately to get the weight off him!

Ditto f_s_ ! I've been really struggling to keep the weight off mine this summer, especially while he was off work. Let's hope that the situation is being worked on!
 
plenty of us struggle to keep the weight off, I have posted pics of frank when I bought him before, he was fat but not that bad. he was v v lucky not to have lami and after a vetting which revealed him being quite fit (he had been in lightish work for a couple of months and turned out on grass) underneath he went into pretty hard work as soon as I could. I could easily let him get in that state again. He doesn't need hugely restricted grazing but he needs lot of work.


I don't believe if out of work and if fed accordingly this pony would be in this state, poss a bit overweight but this is not a bit and my worry is that owners don't see it and pony ends up dead.

I had to be v v careful with Frank when he pulled his shoulder in march and had a month off just when the grass started growing.

and the way it is also carrying a heck of a lot of weight round its shoulders and backside in comparison to the size of its legs.
 
To me the judging is 2 fingers up to the WHW campaign Fit not Fat (or is it BHS? one of the two anyway).


I don't care if it was the only one in its class (and there are other pics of in-hand shetlands which suggest maybe it wasn't) - a horse that obese should, IMO, have got a 2nd out of 1 and its child handler politely explained as to why it couldn't come first

ETS compare it to 101813, the coloured. Notice the distinct lack of belly on that one.
 
see, it was my RC who had one similar last year, poss worse, could barely trot and I feel bad for not noting her competitior number and getting address as I would have been in a position to do so. If I hadn't been trying to do about 5 things at once I would have done so and was pleased that the judge did at least speak to her about it.
 
Totally agree with you Naturally, the WHW are asking judges not to put up obese ponies, hopefully the judge had a word with the child abut her pony's weight. Our pony is being shown by a friends daughter in l/r and veteran. We work really hard to keep the weight off her as she tends to put it on now she is not so active, but some of the animals against her in these classes are grossly overweight. And don't get me started on the Working Hunters

Shouldn't a Working Hunter, ideally, be a working hunter?
 
Maybe, just a thought do WHW do fit not fat leaflets. That would be good to have at the secretaries tent.

Do you think they would want to come to shows and give out free advice?

I saw a small cob last weekend which I found out is full brother to a friends, friends looks great the other is huge! I'm a nice person (hopefully!) and don't know what to say to people as am not sure ranting at them is the way to go.

It just makes my heart sink when I see them though.
