Hi Everyone :)

Were I keep swallow has a mixture of horses who go out 24/7 and ones that still come in at night and some who horses stay in in the day and go out at night. I'm in the come in at night.

There's two barns one with horses that are coming in at night and the other with one horse that is coming in in the day and out at night. One that i have no clue what it's doing it's changes by the day she's out today leaving swallow alone. and 5 others that seem to be out 24/7 no for sure 1 but not sure about the other 4.

Swallow in a routine where she comes in at night seems settled i did try her out and she hated it she almost fell asleep walking out of the field . my problem comes that when the barn is empty she nieghs at first when the other horses go it's the first night so i'm hoping she'll calm she also get very clingy to other horses so if i don't remove her i'll never catch her. the other barn the stables are tiny so i can't move her in there.

My plan was to try what i have done tonight for a week and see if she settles ?

I understand some people prefer 24/7 and this thread might gets ripped to threads but she has had friends before and when they move to different yard she uncontrollable it destorys her. In no way do i want anyone to think I am doing it to be mean i'm trying to do what best for her. She also gets fizzy on lots of grass and has problems with her skin if she is out for very long periods say 24/7 she would itch constantly

Thank you to anyone who made it to the end

i know my mare would not settle if she was in a barn on her own at night so cant really help you with suggestions......i would put mine where the others are so if she had to be out 24/7 that would be better than being in and stressing all night..or change to the other barn and have her out all night and in with company during the day....but also wanted to say what a pretty horse you have :D

I don't no as yet wether she will stress all night will find out tomorrow but i think she will settle. the problem is she wouldn't go out 24/7 she hates chnage what she probably wants is a firend in the barn with her last year their was one other and she was fine.

Thank you for you help:)

My two horses used to be stabled in a block with four other horses but when one of them was sold I had to move to a different barn that only had two stables in it. The horse that the other stable belonged to was a stresshead in the stable and was turned out 24/7 so I was a bit worried about how my boy would cope being in on his own with no other hirses.in sight. He actually settled really well on his own, which made things like box rest a lot easier.

I would give your mare a couple of days to see if she settles before making a decision.

OK, just to make sure that I have understood everything...

Your horse is turned out during the day and stabled at night?
She will soon be the only horse in her barn that is stabled at night?
You tried her out 24/7 before but she was tired?
She suffers from mild sweet itch like symptoms?
She can get fizzy if she eats too much grass?
She doesn't like being alone?

Is she usually stabled at night all year round? I'm not sure I completely understand your post - your mare doesn't like being out 24/7 because she falls aleep when you bring her out of the field?

Personally I don't like leaving horses by themselves, and I hate seeing them stressed. We split our boys so they at least have one other to share their routine, I think unless you can find your mare another livery who wants to be stabled overnight you may have to consider leaving her out.

She looks very sweet.

I think what the OP meant by the horse falling asleep as she was brought in was that she had been so unsettled by being out all night she hadn't rested and was completely shattered. Hopefully I've understood that right!

She seemed okay this morning hopefully she'll be fine

Yes she did have a friend last year tho i think that's the difference I'm hopeing someone new will come and she'll ahve a firend in there with her

You tried her out 24/7 before but she was tired? she just didn't settle and got so worked up that when i brought her in all she wanted to do was sleep
She suffers from mild sweet itch like symptoms?yes
She can get fizzy if she eats too much grass?yes
She doesn't like being alone? she does and she doesn't she didn't stress last night so i'm guessing from that that she didn't i don't know wether it's just me being concerned and she'll be fine or not

i hope i answered everything :)

I think you do need to prepare your horse for 24/7 turnout if they have been brought in at night for the winter.

On my yard we are all in at night from about October through to now ish. The times some horses have been brought in has been Crazy, say 2 pm to be then turned out at 10 am next day.

Last Winter My horse was in at night, out during the day from about 6:30am to 4pm. As the weather improved she started to stay out later, so she would come in say 5-5:30pm and then later again say 6-6:30pm and then it works out that she can come in about 6:30-7pm have a little brush and back out to have tea in her field.

I brought her in at night last September as the grass in the summer fields had completely gone and I was having to supplement with hay and a feed but she wasnt maintaining her weight so I brought her in at night with another livery who brought her 2 aswell, long story short she then turned hers back out 24/7 but this was no longer working for my horse who was quite happy to stay in at night on her own with plenty of hay and her tea.
(I know she was happy as her bed was not trashed, she was quite chilled and ready to go back out next morning and quite ready to come in at the end of the day)

I have been preparing her again for 24/7 turnout and she shall be having her first night out tonight with plenty of hay and a lightweight rug on.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I would speak to YM and see if anything can be swapped around or moved to your barn so your horse isn't alone. I don't think its unreasonable to want your horse in at night and turned out during the day if that routine suits her the best. I had one who needed this routine too so I totally understand what you mean.

If its not possible to move anything round to give your horse company I would also try her for awhile on her own and see if she settles....tbh I think mine would be fine with this as long as she saw her friends in the daytime. As long as mine has her tea and hay at night she's not that worried about anyone else :)

If she doesn't settle I guess you can only consider 24/7 turnout or getting her a companion? Or try and persuade one of your fellow liveries to do the same routine, perhaps offer to muck out or something in return...once the grass really gets going someone might be happy to start bringing off the grass at night again?

Hope it sorts itself out for you and your horse, she looks a sweetie :)

she stayed in at night all last summer and winter. she doesn't seem happy if tried 24/7 but so far she doesn't that stressed in the barn on her own. So hopefully she'll be okay i don't know what i'll do if she doesn't settle it's like a catch 22. Oh and i forgot to mention at the moment she is turned out from about quarter to 9 am and brought it at around 5.30pm but as soon as it's wamer in the eveings she'll go out quarter to 9 til 9pm.

Thank you so much :)her bed was the same like when she has other horses in the barn. I was worrying so much last night about her. She's always been diffcult it's like she loves her routine but wnats everyone to work around her:p which is diffcult when everyone does there own thing just keep my fingers crossed that she still seems okay today and the rest of the week. There is a lday with a very overweight cob which probably should come in at night but she can't be bothered coming up twice a day:rolleyes:

Thank you :)

Sorry, its nothing to do with your questuion, just wanted to say your horse is an absolute beaut! I would give a lot for mine to look like that!! :p

My Hackney mare just hates barn standing. It was impossible to bring her in on her own, as she could hear noises but had no idea where where they were coming from and boy, did she used to freak out. I moved to a more traditional stable set up so she could at least look out and see what noises were being made by what. I too stable at night and if it's heavy rain(she hates the rain) and I don't like to see her standing in a mud bath. There is also no decent grazing, so would rather see her in a stable at least being able to 'trickle feed' than see her standing miserably in a field. Have you tried putting a stable mirror in with her? It might just help. I did get one for my mare but moved yards and then found I didn't need it moving out of the barn stabling set up. Echo what others said about your mare, she is beautiful. Good luck

What about in during the day and out at night?

More going on in the day on the yard to keep them occupied/company.
Less problems with sun/flies ect. at night.

Just that from watching them out 24/7 the schedule seems to be lots of grazing at dusk/early morning and much less activity (especially during the summer) during the day.
And for summer the times are up to 10 at night and from about 4 in the morning.
